Metal snare

i got a premade survival kit at the store was taking it apart and found a metal snare wire it is not really that bendable kind of stiff it is a lot like rc car attenas if you know wht i mean i have used snares before but how woulod i use this one

What you are referring to is high-tensile spring wire and is not good snare wire.

20, 22, or 24ga. stainless steel or copper wire works really well for snares. I have used all 3 gauges and both types with good success. This type of wire is malleable and can easily be made into snare loops. It generally comes in 15', 20', 25', or 50' rolls, depending on where you get it.

Nativedude is correct. Your snare wire is probably best used in a spring-type trap (you know, bent over saplings... looney toons kinda stuff) where the prey only needs to move the wire a bit to activate the trap.

You can also get some multi strand SS wire that is very flexible and small dia to use for snares. It would be very strong and can be used with cable lock to prevent slippage when it is set off.

Hey, WildGoth. Is it possible your snare wire looks like this? Where did you get the kit and what is the brand name. I suspect you may be looking at one of the flex wire saws instead of snare wire. By the way, brass wire is good for snares, too. It has the same properties Native Dude described above.

Of course, Being able to PICK the right string is key to a good snare. and you have to make certain you are in TUNE with snaring smaller animals. A good SLIDE through the noose will ensure some good ACTION and a nice meal.

most kits i've seen try in some way to insinuate that the saws can be used as snares. very short, ineffective snares...

and if you were lucky enough to snare an animal of substantial size, the crimped on end, would more than likely, pull or break off, allowing the animal to get away, possibly with the wire wrapped around its neck or body. That would not be good!

I've seen way too many of the rings on those supposed "survival saws" break and/or pull off, rendering it useless!
