Thread: stove fuel

  1. #1

    Default stove fuel

I just tried sea foam in the homemade alcy stove and it worked. The flame was yellow, not blue and there was visible smoke. I searched to see if anyone had tested various stove fuels and couldn't find that it had been done. Does anyone know what can and can't be used? For less refined fuel do you need bigger holes in the stove for a better burn?

Are you talking about the fuel additive and injector cleaner? I hadn't heard of that brand before.

I would generally use wood as it is all over the place (or rye crisp crackers/bread, also all over the place...) But maybe that was not the question.

You can't go in to nature, nature is not a place or an object. Nature just is. You are living it.

I've tried gas line antifreeze, methyl hydrate and gin. The latter doesn't work well, but if you've got it in a pinch its probably better that to try and survive drunk.

As an example, it has been said that you can use Jet fuel in place of kerosene in stoves/heaters. Where I live, they add deicing chemicals to the Jet fuel that are noxious to humans when burned. Personally, I would absolutely NOT be experimenting with flammables without first finding out if they are unhealthy. Also, in certain types of stoves/appliances using the wrong fuel can cause serious flare ups, cause fires, and I would expect even overhead and blow up. Certainly not trying to preach, and I imagine you have already considered all this, but thought worth saying in case someone reading this thread doesn't.

Thanks sjj. That site answered my question.

Also remember the the Heet, alcohol, and some of the other stuff burns with little or no visible flame.
Resist the temptation to add more fuel when using it.....or......make a really cool flame thrower!
    P.S.
I really thought that whiskey would work, doesn't, but I guess the only one that would work, maybe would be "Ever-Clear"?

No sir, Hunter, none of the grain alcohol works. I have been experimenting with it, however. So you should send anything like Everclear, Wild Turkey, Old Crow, Jim Beam and the like to me for field trials. That stuff has no value otherwise.

Mrs. Rick: Where are you going?

    Rick: Liquor store.

    Mrs. Rick: Again?

Rick: Yep - working on this experiment.

Mrs. Rick: But you only use one ounce out of each bottle.....

Interesting picture. I assume it's in Mexico. Most of the posters are in English. Are the ID cards to insure an illegal immigrants' child doesn't try to go to school in Mexico?

I have a Optimus Hunter stove that I use allot. It will burn just about any fuel but I use mostly unleaded or white gas. I have used diesel, Heet and kerosene in it. It's not very picky but white gas burns the best.

This is a picture I copied from the web. Mine is old and very well used. It is a bit different in that it does not have the green tank (mine is brass) or the pump. Sorry I don't happen to have a picture of mine.

    1. If it's in your kit and you don't know how to use it....It's useless.
    2. If you can't reach your kit when you need it....Its useless.

Hmm. I keep hearing on the "interwebs" that grain alcohol burns in alcohol stoves as long as it is 70% or higher alcohol. What's the deal? I thought if it was 70% alcohol it would work. I've even used 70% isopropyl.
