    Default Sickle and scythe

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=gL2_chKPWjE scythe at work

Here are a couple tools that some of our younger members have never had the opportunity to see and or use. Also a tools that many of our older members have only too vivid memories of using. The sickle and the scythe. These are two tools that I think should be considered if you are in a fixed location, or have extra room in your BOV. These two tools can make fairly short work of clearing underbrush (not trees), cutting grasses for animal feed, etc . It does take some sweat to use them, but they have proven their usefulness over the years. There are many types and shapes of each. I did a quick “google” and it would seem that you can get these for under $50 each. And probably less if you shopped around. Just food for thought.

I've got a couple of old sickles that somebody was throwing out. They're on my "bring em back to life" list. A scythe would be cool - probably keep solicitors away too.

A scythe and a long black robe with a hood on it can keep pretty much everyone away.
some fella confronted me the other day and asked "What's your problem?" So I told him, "I don't have a problem I am a problem"

I guess I'm kinda in the middle, age wise....I've seen plenty of them, but I have never used one.

If so it must be Government sponsored. After all Daylight Savings time was created so kids could help out with chores on the farm so it didn't interfere with school hours.

Seemed to work for me, I turned out fairly well. Well, at least not any worse or better than the rest

Well actually 2d, I never speak for everyone nor would I attempt to, but I would hazard the guess that many, many people here would find that encouraging....the notion that you're starting to think

Have both and used them plenty. In E. KY a sickle was sometimes called a "reaphook", don't bother asking why, don't know.

Might have something to do with some of them being kind of hook shaped and used for, um, reaping stuff? Just a guess.

Dad should be highly proud of you.

Yeah, I've practiced on them more than I care to remember. I have a couple of sickles but no scythe.

LOL, these gotta be the most diabolical tool, right behind post hole diggers.

But in retrospect, used to be, we would show up at the "Place", when it was a field, with just a small 16' Shasta trailer, take the sickle( same tools as was pictured), cut a small swath to park on, and trim up the pourch area, drop off the gear bags inside, light up the furnace, pop a beer and relax.
    That was it.
Hunting the next morning, then more relaxing, and so on.

Now with the cabin, tractors, mowers, weed wackers, sprayers, etc, seems a lot more work and a whole lot less relaxing........So who is to say what is better?

BTW, the manual weed wacker is for sale cheap!

I hear ya hunter. I used to raise my sleeve to look at the time. Today, you have to raise your sleeve, push two buttons to get the time, shield it from the sun so you can see the display, slip a magnifying lens out of your back pocket and hold it so the sun doesn't fry the display. Thank God for progress!

I inherited all my dads tools. I know, but with 3 girls what else was he to do? my sisters didn't want them. I have his gardening tools, sickle, scythe, billhooks and all his woodworking tools. Plus all the gear he used as a forester. Sometime I'll take photos and post them.

Just to add, yes I can use most of them, but I never was any good at woodwork! (Thats Winnie jnr's department)

You know there is a scythe down in the barn. We tried to use it but it is so old that the blade started bending. That is too bad because there are places here on the farm I would like to use it because of rocks and stuff. Guess I'll have to check and see if I can't find a Modern one with new steel.
