Fishing Nets

I saw the spear fishng post and It made me think of my Ranger Book showed a picture of a fishing net in the wilderness section but then just passed over it without an explention of how to make one. I think that just like setting traps are more effective then hunting with a bow same with an et that you drape across the stream is better then a spear............ so with tht said can some one tell me how to make one

i've never gotten net-making down well but i can post some good links i know of on the subject.

personaly, and in the spirit of sticking to my strengths, i like basket traps better for streams/rivers.

Ok Rick,help me out you showed Smok a basket net and Canid mentioned it too, but I didnt realy get the picture you showed Smok. How do you make a basket net/trap?

a basket trap can be as simple as making a long cone of spokes from a flexible, stiff material [warp] such as split cane/bamboo, reed, fine split cedar, etc], and weave it around [wheft] with another material such as split roots of connifer, dried cat-tail leaves, dried nettle stalks, etc. in such a manner as to make a rigid cone open enough for water to flow through. leave several inches of the spokes sticking out from the open end, fold inward to make sort of teeth, which would prevent a fish from swimming back out. this trap would be placed allong the water's flow in such a manner that passing fish would have to [or be more than randomly inclined to] try to swim through it to pass. this can be enhanced by making a sort of corral of pickets or stones to funnle the fish into the traps. some fish traps have been effectively made from just the pickets or stones arranged in various configurations as to corral the fish into large pools where leaving is made more complicated than entering, and where they can later be speared, tossed or similar.

fish traps can also be improvised from other materials, even modern ones such as chicken wire, fencing wire, etc. as it may be available.

just an expanded description of what Rick posted in the other thread, but quite effective with practice. the best procurment methods are passive ones.

I am going to try and make a turtle trap this spring. Not going to buy one, build it with the stought chicken wire and weave my own net entrance.

I really want to trap snappers this year. I really like snapper meat.

yeah. turtles are easy to trap, as they'll crawl inside anything you bait. eels are that way too.

Frank, if you want to build a turtle trap, take a look at this. It's just a set of floats and a couple of trip doors. The turtle climbs up to sun and drops down in the basket.

Proud, here's one version of a turtle trap made of net. Turtles are not particularly bright and plow forward just looking for food. If you look closely at the second picture, you can see there is a funnel made of net. Once the turtle gets past the funnel, he can't get back out.

I've heard of a turtle trap made from a 5 Gal. bucket but I cant find it on the web. Anyone ever seen one?

I have used one several times long years ago.
on the banks of a stream or pond etc, burry the bucket so that its lip is flush with the ground. Place a rock or log nearby to act as a pivot. Place a plank or log on the pivot so that one end is on the ground (Facing the pond) and the other end extends into space ending above the bucket. when the turtle climbs on the plank to bask (as they invariably seem to do) and crawls up past the pivot point its own weight will tip the plank over and the turtle will slide into the bucket. since the bucket walls are smooth it cannot get out. Just make sure the plank does not drop in to the bucket too.

Small turtles are sometimes able to hold on to the plank with their tiny claws but the larger ones almost always fall in.

What about crayfish or crawfish for you american folks. They are small enough to cook in a beer can and if there happens to be beer in it well thats just that much better. They are really easy to catch and if you have a trap, the food just piles up.

Some years we net whitefish. I have a commercially purchased net. I'd hate to have to make one, as the thing is 100 feet long.

We used to net through the ice. We'd have to cut a hole in the ice every 10 feet and push a ten foot pole under the water, attached to the net, from hole to hole.

Now the season is earlier, and we set using canoes. It is a gill net and has to be set up parallel to the shore (by law) so you don't take too many. We get plenty the way it is, but you have to remove any game fish, and the game wardens are always checking to make sure you do.

Trouble is, the season is very close to deer season, and it is hard to get that much time off work. Another thing I'll be doing more of when I retire.

I just finished making a replacement net for my dip net. Next thing I am going to make is a wire net for catfish (last pic). A wire net is basically a net webbing over a frame made with concrete reinforcement wire, that has a net funnel in front that is slightly open and a closed flat second funnel so that after a fish pushes through it, he cannot get back out.
