    Default Extreme Survival

Anyone ever hear of Ray Mears? He's a UK man teaching survival. In this episode on youtube he follows Robert Rogers of Rogers Rangers fame, one of his hero's (Ha the Brits even gotta have Yank hero's!) not to shabby for a Brit thing... just kidding.
Here is the link to the first of six videos of the BBC program, "Extreme
Survival", in which the host goes to America and follows the trail the Rangers
took to St. Francis. You'll find links to the other 5 parts of the video on this
same page. Thanks to the F&I Women Yahoo group for posting this link!

    Hope ya all enjoy
    Beo,
There is no greater solitude than that of the Tracker in the forest, unless perhaps it's that of the wolf in the wilderness.

Beo, remember that Roger was a Brit. He tried to join with Washington, but Washington thought he was a spy, so he joined the British after that.

There's a new series on TV at the moment, Ray Mears Northern Wilderness. It's a history of Canada, with a bit of wilderness living/ survival thrown in. I've really enjoyed it.

Why don't we have those kind of shows over here? We're left with you know who and that's it.

Ray Mears is the man, No Joke. He's like the Macgyver of the wilderness. Here's a video of him yanking a rock out of the ground, knapping a blade from it then proceeding to baton wood with it.

I was thinkin of that. a complete greenhorn goes out and tries to survive in the wilderness for a week. As the season goes along he gets better at skills or the season ends abruptly.

    I'd TiVo that.

As weird it feels to admit this, I actually liked Myers very much. Even though he visited Sweden and not Finland. The b*st*rd... And claimed that some of the finest knives are made there etc... Probably cause swedes are more talkative though..

What I like about the man is, that he mostly keeps it real, he apparently knows his stuff and has many opinions and ways to work that I share with him. One thing that bothers me slightly is that he appears to have something of a childlike joy and innocence even, when it comes to nature. He reminds me of myself when I was a kid and my dad had me with him on our trips to forests. But then again, it is what makes his shows watchable. If there was your average Finnish woodsman doing the show, he would only say "Watch now because I won't show this again. You'd better get it the first time." and he wouldn't smile, not even once...

EDIT: Oh, but he sure can't ski! Bloody awful to watch him try...

Survival is not about surviving AGAINST the nature. It's about surviving WITH the nature.

You can't go in to nature, nature is not a place or an object. Nature just is. You are living it.

thats great. i made the EXACT same qoute here a while ago haha. awesome. kudos.

i have been a mears fan for a while.
he makes it all look so easy. i know that is a function of skilled editing but i dont see that as a bad thing. when presenting educational information i think its good to keep it smooth and flowing, so it is clear and easy to follow. watching someone make mistakes is good too but im going to make enough mistakes of my own. sometimes i want a "how to" to be more HOW TO and not so much how NOT to.

You've obviously never been with me in the woods while I'm trying a fire bow. Several salty sailors and three biker groups left embarrassed because of the language. #$%^@ 3$%# #$%%% fire bow!

i'd probably end up with a spindle in the eye like Canterbury almost did.

I like the "trial and error" approach. I also like the tried and true approach. I don't think Ray mears would need a lot of fancy editing to make a bow drill work, etc.

I like his approach. Not making everything look miserable and difficult. I believe he truly enjoys what he does and could live quite comfortably in the bush.

I really liked the ice fishing parts of his vids and wish he would have used some type of cordage and homeade fish hooks for that.
