    Default Beeswax

I had been pondering a good source for beeswax, then it hit me. Surfwax! It is used to wax surfboards! I had a little from 15 yrs ago when I used to live in FL! It is about the size of a hockey puck and perfect for all kinds of uses. Just thought I'd pass that on to you guys.

    Good Morning All,

Years ago I had five Supers of bees. I collected the wax and used it for various things. One application I found particularly helpful was using the wax for fire starters. I would take sheets of news paper and roll it together until it was about 1.25" in diameter. I secured the roll with some of my wife's thread to keep it from coming unrolled. I melted bees' wax in a cookie sheet (a shallow pan about 2' long x 1' wide x 1/5" deep and placed the rolled paper onto the cookie sheet allowing the wax to soak into the paper (thru and thru). Occasionally I would roll the paper through the liquid wax.

When satisfied the paper roll was well soaked, I remove the roll and allow it to drain and cool. Using a knife or my band saw (saw was much quicker) I cut the wax impregnated paper roll into 1" sections. When ready to use I would simply light the "waxed paper" with matches or a lighter and add tender. In no time I had a nice camp fire.

The up side to this is, these fire starters will last for years, they don't get wet and they always light. Additionally, since paper is pulp wood, paper has a high kindling temperature and produces quite a bit of "start up heat".

    Harold

EDIT: Forgot to mention that sawdust can be placed in paper cups and hot wax poured into the cup. Hot wax holds the sawdust and cup together, wax soaks into the wood chips, non of this will soak up water, and this also makes a good fire-starter. Gulf paraffin wax is a wonderful substitute.
