They've gotten to be such a problem down here that there is no closed season and the law changed to allow electronic calls and hunting at night. A pack ate up some of my neighbors dogs a few weeks ago... We hear them nightly..
Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. Helen Keller

We have a $20 bounty on them here. After reading this I need to go hunting.
A mouse ate a hole in my lumpy chair.
One MORE reason to carry when out in the woods.

Last summer, my wife walked out the front door to be confronted by a pack of 6 - 8. She ducked back inside to get a weapon but they had left. We carry often just around the ranch.

If by what I have learned over the years, allow me to help one person to start to prepare. If all the mistakes I have made, let me give one person the wisdom that allows them to save their life or the life of a loved one in an emergency. Then I will truly know that all the work I have done will have been worth every minute.
We still hear them around a few nights each week. Should get interesting when the leaves finally drop off the ground vegetation and the flood lights get turned on.![]()

Lots of folks have been noticing coyotes getting more aggressive in the last few years. The eastern coyote genetically is a coywolf. When you see some of the packs it’s not hard to figure out that they have been hybridizing with dogs also. I’m look forward to the versions of what triggered the attack. Her death was tragic. It’s never been wise to travel in the Highlands alone. Here’s a pic of a ridge on the Skyline Trail where she was heading.

"THOR" could have saved her.......(Thor is the name of my walking stick). Odd that she was walking alone.
SD: You are so right. I am a complete believer in the "Two Man(Person)-Rule" when at all possible. I tried for years to convince a certain SAR unit about that. Rule 1: Don't become another victim. And don't forget Murphy's Law.

While it certainly would be safer to be hiking with somebody, hiking alone is sometimes what the spirit yerns for. Look at how many of us wander off alone into the woods alone.
and yes so few of us expect one day to be eaten by something. why?
it's a negligible risk.
how many people do you all know who carry tack-strips when walking in town in case of a bad driver?
more people are killed by them each year than even livestock are by coyotes. will we issue a bounty on people who use cell phones while driving?

You have a future in politics.will we issue a bounty on people who use cell phones while driving?
haha.
for the record, i am not advocating letting an animal which is attacking you continue to do so. if a coyote is currently threatening your animal, do what you have to, as i'm sure each person would decide to anyway.
but bounties on the slaughter of animals because they present a potential threat? makes no sense to me.
i'm even in line with the removal of known nuisance animals, but even this is just an attempt to controll and model the natural proccesses that make our planet worth living on.
if you can't live with the wildlife you share your home with, move.

There is something to be said for being alone in the woods.
They have issued a bounty on cell-phone talking drivers. Against the law now in many jurisdictions.
Population control through hunting has been a proven practice for many many years. The fact that where this happened is a hunt free area may or may ot have been a factor. But it certainly needs to be considered.
Hunting was around long before PETA
Around here it is Open Season regardless of what the Game and fish folks say. When it comes to coyotes there fair game all the time, most of the farms around here are either Dairy or Beef cattle. Several have lost calves to them. Not to mention a couple of dogs, barn cats, etc.
I Agree 100%. But They Can Sit So Still You Can't See Them In The Brush And They Can Ambush You. I Think Having Strong Body Language Is The First Line Of Defence. They Could Ambush You Before You Can Draw Your Weapon. If The Animal Charges And Stops To Rethink The Attack It Could Give You Time To Draw. I Think Having A Big Pack Might Be A Plus Here, Makes You Look Like A Tougher Kill To The Animal. I'm Especially Wary Due To My Small Stature, 125lbs At 5'7, I Try And Walk In Wide Open Areas So I Can See More Around Me.

If that's the case I probably look like an Abrams coming through the woods. No wonder I never see coyote.
