Winter pasttime?

Im tired of being lazy during winter and was wondering anything i can do this winter to be active and learn something about survival.

go get yourself about 8 huskies, a sled and accessorires then head to the nearest forest and see what happens. you'll develop some winter survival skills, be very active, and have alot of learning to keep you passionate.
plus you'll have a blast!

The first question you need to answer is what do you like to do or what are you interested in? You can do just about all of the summertime activities in the winter. Practice the basics:

Fire starting
Shelter building
Water purification

You are faced with much different obstacles in winter than in summer as well as some much different opportunities.

Hiking and camping come to mind. (No bugs!!)
Great way to play with your cold weather kit.
That is when I learned about condensation in a mylar survival blanket.
Just have a way out if conditions go south.

learn how to X-C ski, make your own snow shoes, test them, make your own knife, test it. Go ice swimming, build shelters. Do all kinds of little woodwork. Anything.

Not much different than any time of the year. I ride an ATV year round, do woodworking and things I didn't have time for when I was cutting grass. I always worked outside in all kinds of weather so it comes down to no bugs, no cutting grass and more time in the garage or workshop and it's peaceful in the woods.

Here are a few hobbies I urge you to try over the winter:

1. Duct Tape Art: Duct tape is one of those essential survival items. Enhance your knowledge of this essential item by learning how to create art using only duct tape.

2. Taphophilia: Taphophilia is a passion and enjoyment of cemetaries. That's a winter hobby sure to warm you up!

3. Collect Handcuffs: (Self explanatory)

4. Befriend Seagulls: A short trip to your local McDonalds and a few dozen orders of large fries will go a very long way in your quest to befriend huge flocks of them.

5. Collect Empty Straw Wrappers: Trips to SEVERAL McDonalds locations will start you off fast.

6. Arrange Ant Fights: Gather entire colonies of different species of ants in your home. Let each species start off in a different room of your house, and antagonize them. Pretty soon, your living room will be an arena for title bouts.

7. Join a Dart Team: Most Dart Throwing Teams are always in search of a good Goalie. I'm sure you're up to the task.

8. Javeline Catching: Another sport you should take up!

9. Write Personal Letters to People You Don't Know: Randomly select the names and addresses of people you don't know on the Internet, and write them letters disclosing personal information about yourself. Ask them to reciprocate!

10. Create Your Own Fan Club: Ask people to join. I'm sure you'll get a great response!

11. Write a Book about Jails in your Region: Simply get arrested for petty crimes in different counties across the country and become a wealth of first-hand knowledge about different jails. Write a book about your experiences.

12. Get Drunk and Write a Letter to the President: Make sure to express any disapproval you may have about administration policies.

I love winter. It presents more opportunities to explore the woods. Places you couldn't go before like swamps.

The lack of bugs makes sleeping out in the open air much nicer.

The opportunity for star-gazing and northern lights hunting are much greater.

Build a quinzhee and perfect it.

Hunting, easier to track animals in the snow.

Discover the miracle of wool.

Winter is a fantastic time of year especially if you live somewhere where winter is cold. I mean -20C and colder.

I do a lot or reading over the winter.
I go over all my gear and check for needed repairs and swap out any items that have a shelf date. I make changes to some of the items like put in cold climate clothing. I have been doing some study of local wild edibles and medicinals and have gone back to follow their life cycle. I'm about due for a last plant trip for the season. Wood and leather work. I will be making elk skin shirt and pants for winter. I thought about trying bow making if I can find a good stave of wood. Planning a day hike in Monaghelia National Forest with my son in law. No real plan for winter just enjoying out doors.
