A discussion with the Principal at My 8 year old godsons school recently prompted me to make this post (specifically the GI Joe clip). Now mind you this school district is directly adjacent to the largest military installation in the Northeast. He was telling me and several other adults that the schools goal was to be more "gender neutral" in its programs. And they were encouraging parents not to purchase military, cowboy or other "macho" toys for male kids as presents for the Holidays (Holidays verus Christmas is a story for anothertime). I inquired why woud you do that. His response was that they did not want to encourage the boys to be aggressive. This got most of the adults present (3/4s were female) extremely upset. Well,, a rather spirited discussion ensued. Afterwards it got me to thinking about how things have been "watered down" ,made Politically correct and its impact on our youth. I know I am showing my age, but aren't boys supposed to get dirty, rough house with each other and play cowboys and indians and such? And girls be taught to act like ladies? I know, women can and do live and work in this society as equals and rightfully so, but in some cases the "basics" seem to be missing.

OK, I will go back to my cave now

that's why i smoke. i'm sure if i'd never seen a cartoon character smoking the idea never would have occurred to me even once...

as for macho toys, i loved them. i couldn't get enough. i haven't clubbed anybody over the head senselessly as yet, and it still didn't keep me from integrating my sister's toys while i played.

Gender neutral? Is his brain in neutral? How does playing and rough housing make a child "aggressive"? I did all those things when I was a kid and I'm not aggressive. Children learn by example not by playing with toys.

Speaking from a ladies and mothers point of view I see no problem with boys being boys, or girls being tomboys for that matter. I played cowboys and indians, as did most of the girls(we always had to be the indians and always had to lose) then again, we also played with dolls, had tea parties and made dolls clothes. Needless to say the boys didn't. As a gang of kids we just played.... didn't matter what, thats what children do. I don't care who says differently boys and girls are wired differently.
As for masculine toys making boys more violent phooee.

Well a cartoon had absolutely not one thing to do with my picking up the habit of smoking. It had more to do with the people around me smoking. But even THAT isn't the reason I started smoking, the military did. When I was in Basic Training I was always tired. One day we were on the Range, the Drill Sgt. said "All those of you who smoke, smoke 'em if you got 'em. The rest of you come with me" Those of us that didn't smoke were put to work. The next time we went to the PX I bought some smokes, Long story short, I started smoking in Basic to get a break, and have been smoking ever since.

I believe kids should be kids, You start messing with "Gender roles" all you do is confuse them even more than they already are. Kids are never "Politically Correct" they will tell you exactly what's on their mind. It called innocent honesty, they just call 'em like they see 'em. They don't know any different. If you have a "booger" on your nose, they will tell you and it doesn't matter who is around.

I think the problem is that some people don't understand, being equal doesn't mean being identical.

Teach your kids right from the start, and don't blame the way they turn out on commercials are someone else! Bottom line.

Candy cigarettes are what got me smoking. Dealing with, and living in a more and more politically correct world is what's kept me smoking.

I've blown up, fried, buried, launched into near space many a Joe, star wars action figures and countless lil green army men and i've yet to want to blow up a real person, unless they're polically correct.

Any good idea taken to it's extreme is bound to become a bad idea--from PCness to Health.

It's easier to blame the society the media and the govt. and harder to take personal responsibility.

There's more crime today, more obesity, more substance abuse, more of everything that's not helping us be better human beings.
And yet, we know more about just about anything. Ignorance is no longer an excuse.

    Well, what is it then?

If people took responsibility for their own actions and kept their moral compass
in check, there would be no need for "intervention" no matter how well intentioned.
Do-gooders would stick to bringing a covered dish to a new neighbor and we would all live happily ever after.
