    Default Another Stupid Federal Law

A local fisherman was charged with violating a federal law for untangling a whale that was caught in his net. It seems that our idiots in Congress passed a law prohibiting fishermen from freeing whales and marine mammals caught in their fishing nets. It took the fisherman two hours to free the whale. However, the law requires "trained rescuers and federal permits to disentangle whales and other federally protected marine species."

I would think that a fisherman is pretty capable of disentangling things caught in his nets. However, the damned idiots in Congress passed a law which would have likely caused the whales death while waiting for "trained rescuers" to arrive and "federal permits" to be processed.

Every day I become more and more convinced that the vast majority of elected officials and appointed bureaucrats at all levels of government are a$$holes. I'm just waiting for the day that they pass a law that limits me to 4 wipes with 3 1/2 sheets of toilet paper in the presence of a federal inspector.

Ken , am I detecting an underlying sense of frustration? It does get maddening when someone like the fisherman is guilty of common sense. And it is obvious that you did not read the Memo, effective 1 Oct 2009, your referenced "toilet" paper law starts to phase in. With final implimentation which would include all "would be" politicians as the federal inspectors (what else would they be qualified for)in Oct 2011.

You left out the part about any turd longer than 4", that is deposited into a port-a-john, must be lowered, by hand, into the water, to prevent splashing, which could spread disease.

Sarky - in your honor - I will be hitting the flea market this weekend in search of a good quality, rable rousing, pitchfork. As you know - not just any pitchfork will do.

that is another prime example of how the gov thinks that we are too stupid to do normal things and that a "trained" someone should be payed big money to do that for us. it makes me sick...

Perhaps it was enacted to prevent fisherman from just killing the animal to free their nets. Naw, no one would ever do that. Why does everyone assume the absolute worst in human kind? Take a moment and try to see both sides of an argument. Research it just a bit...

Here are some numbers you can think about.

According to the Cetacean Bycatch Action Network (that's a response team of global scientists trying to address the problem) 60,000 whales, dolphins and porpoises die each year due to entanglement with fishing nets.

150 whales and dophins die each day after being entangled in fishing gear.

"In the Gulf of Maine during the 1990s, bycatch of harbor porpoise in gillnets was so severe that federal officials were considering placing the population on the endangered species list."

"In some cases, reducing bycatch may include the need for stiffer penalties to enforce existing laws. A ship fishing illegally in the Galapagos Marine Reserve off the coast of Ecuador in May 2002 killed or injured some 70 dolphins in its nets, while harvesting just eight yellow-fin tuna."

I guess it makes for really stupid government to try a fix a problem.

Gee. Wouldn't it make more sense to prohibit killing them rather than to prohibit trying to save them?

Rick, I understand that the government is contemplating a ban on drivers rendering first aid if they are involved in an accident and others are injured. Same logic. You don't want drivers saving someone's life just to avoid a motor vehicle homicide charge, do ya'?

    By the way, Rick.........

I once spent over a day in (that's "IN" not "on") the water trying to save a small whale that was beaching itself. It took 18 hours for the "response team" from Boston to show up. Understandable .... we were an hour away from Boston.......

How fortunate they were sitting by the phone waiting on your call. It might have taken a while otherwise.

You're lucky that you're not in jail! I'm pretty sure it's illegal, to mess with a whale! (Pffftt...you lawyers....think you're above the law!)
