that is a good idea Nell. Another thing that is a good idea is to carry a walking stick or even a snake hook. A snake hook can be easily made with an old Golf club and some metal rod, Epoxy and some sort of pin or Rivet. A snake hook can be used to turn over logs and rocks in snake country without endangering yourself to the possibility of snake bite!! You don't have to be out catching snakes for a snake hook to prove useful!!!
When I go hunting ginseng,I use a 'seng hoe,a garden hoe with the head cut down to about 2' across,and the handle cut down to about 3-4 ft,serves as a walking stick,digging tool,and for any snake that gets too rowdy,a way to dispatch,as I prefer to let'em go their way,and me mine,unless they don't agree with me.

It appears to be a black rat snake. Not real sure why you'd want to kill it though (thats assuming you didnt find it dead).I could give countless reasons why snakes are beneficial to our eco-system, but Ill save you the bore since snakes have an undeserving bad reputation, people are going to kill them anyway. A general rule of thumb(North America Only) is as Poco says, the arrowhead or triangle shaped heads, are the venemous ones, and not that you should get close enough to look at their eyes, but most venemous snakes in North America have elliptical-shaped eyes. Also, when referring to snakes as poisonous, the correct term is venemous.
