    Default Fly The Flag

I take this opportunity to request that all United States citizens and forum members living in the United States display the American Flag on Friday, September 11, 2009. We must never forget the events of September 11, 2001, and it is our duty to remind those who may have already forgotten.

I also ask that you observe a personal moment of silence and offer a prayer for the 2,974 innocent people, military and civilian, from over 90 nations, who lost their lives to the tragic and evil acts of terrorism that took place eight years ago. Please remember the families and loved ones who survived them in your prayers.

The following sites offer guidelines and etiquette for the display of the American Flag:

Mine has been flying 24 / 7 since 9/11. Wife kept it flying while I was gone. I consider it an honor to continue the tradition. Ihave each of the flags stored as they have been replaced.

Mine has been flying 24/7 as well. On days of importance like 9/11 I add about 20 more smaller flags around the front of my property.

I should hope everyone does and did before 9/11. I started in N. VA in the '60s when those SOBs were burning them a few miles away.

I keep a lighted flag flying 24/7 at my home as well. It's just sad to look at many homes and to see all the empty pole brackets left over from 2001.....

I actually adhere to flag protocol. I cringe at the thought of the flag getting wet. But that's just me. I've even called neighbors before to tell them their flag was getting rained on. Can't touch the ground and all that. Mine will be out provided it doesn't rain.

I have an "all weather flag." Flag etiquette permits use of such flags 24/7 so long as they are lighted.

It is improper to fly the American flag in the rain: False. The Flag Code Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 6 specifically allows this practice if "an all weather flag is displayed." The code is silent on what an all weather flag is, but the intent sure sounds like it means a flag that is able to stand up to the conditions. Even very light weight flags can do so. They just will not do so as long as the better models.

Well, I really wasn't concerned about the code or law, per se. I tried to adhere to protocol out of respect for the flag.

Sure, I will fly on the 11th, even though I am taking my scouts out backpacking. I will fly the flag I received when I earned my Eagle. It was flown at the capital as well. Clinton signed the letter (you can't have everything).

I hope the same sentiment exists for December 7th. I get a little frustrated when people are supper patriotic on September 11th, but forget December 7th.
I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.
