Jonsey, this is exactly the kind of bull$hit that drives me crazy. The fault here lies exclusively with the public officials who have instituted these ridiculous policies and the outragous interpretation and application of these ridiculous policies.
I wonder how a situation like this would have been handled in any other country?

Having been stationed in several other countries, I can tell you right now, if don't show proper respect when it is required..... you will be hurting. What the is it with Flordia??!!?
Wasn't it a couple of months ago that a bunch of hispanic students were flying the Mexican flag above the American flag on a school campus?
I know what hunts you.
It was several months ago and it was a group of kids from another school. Same type of stuff we did when I was in high school. I remember running some clothes up the flagpole at a rival's high school. If I would have had another country's flag, I might have done that, too, just to PO them off. It's sort of what kids do.
Have you guys all gone Willy Wonka? Doesn't that student have the right to wear religious clothing without fear that someone who doesn't agree with them will take issue? Isn't this country about freedom of expression and religion? Do you really want public hangings or beheadings because someone didn't say the Pledge of Allegiance?
Be damned careful of what you ask for. You just might wind up with it.

I say that the girl has the right not to pledge allegiance to anything. I also say that the second girl has the right to say that she doesn't like what the first girl is doing.
To me, it's kinda like the Dixie chick thing. She got all bent out of shape about her right to free speech. She has the right to say what she wants, but I have the right to not buy her music, or listen to it on the radio.

Hey Ken......If I freak out, when I see someone in "Muslim attire", and start screaming that they are terrorist and that they are going to kill us, do you think I could make a good case for mental stress and successfully sue them? LOL
I mean think about it.![]()

You know...this may surprise you, considering where I'm from, but I have only heard one story about those guys, in this area....and the story was about something that happened in the early '50's. The really strange thing, is that the story was positive.
An older woman told us the story, about a man and women that lived down the road, when she was younger.(This was in the country.) It seemed that this guy would come home drunk, and beat on his wife. The lady telling us the story said that after a really bad beating, she felt so bad for that woman that she told a "gentleman" that she knew, about what was going on.
The next night, the "men in sheets" showed up at this guys house. The next day, this guy showed the signs of taking a pretty bad "whoopin". Rumor had it, that they told him the whoopin' was just to get his attention, and that if he ever laid a hand on his wife again, they'd be back....to "string him up".
The lady telling the story said that she didn't know if the rumor was true, but that that guy never hit his wife again.

I think the ROTC student has missed an important part of training. The military of the U.S.A. is apolitical and she seriously over stepped her bounds. She has no right to attempt to enforce her personal views on others!! If she was one of my troops, an intense counciling session on her place in the military and its traditions would be in order. If a military or in this case quasi military member is allowed to get away with this, they are disrespecting our years of honorary military service and sacrifices of those that went before us.
Having said that, let me make it clear: I strongly advocate standing for all ceremonies of national respect and I do look askance at anyone that does. The fact of the matter is it is not illegal not to render these respects.
My views have nothing to do with being politically correct, my views are based on our laws and a military tradition of being apolitical

Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he's too old
to fight... he'll just kill you.
The way I see it is this Both were right AND wrong. Neither has enough RESPECT. The Muslim for her new country,The ROTC student for others right to freedom of expression or lack thereof. The religious headgear is another RIGHT the Muslim has in this Country. You can agree with or disagree with what other people say or don't say, but they have that right.
I'm not sure it was her new country. I didn't see anything in the article that said the Muslim student had relocated. She might have but she might have also been just as American as apple pie.

Quote from the story:
"They were in a third-world country and they had to honor their culture," he said. "People don't have to do that here."
This is so true. Total BS in my opinion.
Alaska to Florida, for how long, who knows...
Proper form when in a foreign country is to stand respectfully. When in Brazil I don't sing their national anthem nor recite a pledge to their flag. I'm a permanent resident, not a citizen there. They stand, you stand, to do less is a sign of disrespect and that will get you market rate disrespect in kind according to local prices.
If the Muslim student was not a US citizen she should have stood in respect of the country she is in. The other student crossed the line telling her to "Take that thing off your head". I don't want to live in a country where people get told how they can or cannot express their faith. I also don't want to live in a country that allows non-citizens to denigrate it or worse, citizens to disrespect it. Pull that crap around me and I give the going rate as well. Mac
The Colhane Channel TV for guys like me.
I have to respectfully disagree. While the student may have crossed the line by saying "take that thing off your head" the rest was warranted. What does telling someone to respect your Country by standing have to do with being apolitical? If anything any member of the Armed Forces would be more inclined to act the way she did than anyone else. I know I would. Not only for the respect of the Flag and this Country, but for all those who have died protecting it.
