Default Man survives 50 days in the Yukon, no pigs

Just heard this on the radio...

a British filmmaker who's been up Mt Everest twice and as well as to the North Pole was airlifted on Saturday from Tincup Lake (close to Kluane National Park, Yukon) after spending 50 days alone in the wilderness. He had been shooting footage for a documentary on surviving alone in the Yukon wilderness and the aim had been to stay for 90 days.

After finding the isolation affecting him badly, and finding it extremely hard to find enough food, he sent a satellite signal to be airlifted out. He had been mostly subsisting on fish, porcupine and later on berries. As a foreigner and documentary filmmaker, he obeyed the hunting rules and did not attempt to hunt for large game. He lost about 28lbs over the course of the 50 days.

The radio interview with the producer of the documentary didn't say much about his equipment, other than that he had a rifle and fishing rod along. Tilted “Alone in the wild”, it will air as a series on National Geographic Channel beginning in mid-September.

Darn, and I can't watch it!

Sounds like it will be interesting. I know it probably is a power luxury, but do you have the option of watching them on line?

Hi WW! It's good to hear from you. How has your summer been? What have you been writing on your news column?

at least he made it 50 days, i consider that a win for him,if it had been a true scenario i am sure search and rescue would have found him in that time, well at least if they hadn't called it off after 14 days due to budget restraints and rugged terrain or inclimate weather or......

I only belong to two forums, and he was in contact with one of them about this project. So he may have interacted with us on this forum early spring.

It seems more like a camping trip, if you take tents, sleeping bags, equipment, telephone, and cameras. Then cook some small game on a stick. His whole intention was to produce footage for TV. I think it is kind of lame.

Oh he had some basic gear? Although the way the weather has been, I don't think the tent and sleeping bag made much of a difference (right now it would!).

Just makes me wonder again about the physical fitness thing...if I lost 28lbs, I'd be dead. Seems to me like the real BOB is those extra few pounds of lard many people have on their belly.

I was just reading about this show in National Geographic Explorer (Magazine). Here's the link: http://channel.nationalgeographic.co...ne-in-the-wild.

    Interesting stuff.

    Thanks for the link, Aurelius!

Think I'll pass on trying to watch it...

this here from the National Geographic website, picture of snarling bear included,
    "Dangers in the Yukon:
With the constant threat of grizzly bears, Ed won't be short of challenges.",
has immediately and permanently snuffed out the faint interest I had in it.

That kind of frigging BS really does drive me up the closest tree!!!!!!!!!!!
    What a load of manure!!!!!!!!

When I first read through the piece I didn't realize (remember, I'm slow) that it was a show Alone In The Wild that I had already seen the "pilot" or tease. Here's a thread where we talked a bit about it before. http://www.wilderness-survival.net/f...ne+in+the+wild It doesn't suprise me that the isolation took it's toll on him. On the preview show, he was reduced to a crying puddle after two days when he saw a plane fly by. I guess the realization that he was truely alone was just starting to set in.
