Alice are good. Sportsman's Guide also has the Used U.S. M.O.L.L.E. Rifleman Backpack Set for $70. Coupon Code: SH175 for $5 off shipping through 17May.
    They also have a used British Military M58 Tactical Set for $15 (Pistol belt is 2 1/8" w., fits up to a 40" waist, 17" wide bed roll carrier,Twin flap-top mag pouches, approx. 4 x 3 1/4 x 6 1/2" h. One has side tool pouch, Buttpack with 2 flap-top covers, each is 8 x 3 x 7" h., Flap-top backpack is 16 1/2 x 4 3/4 x 11 1/2" h. with 2 side flap-top closure pockets Padded, adjustable carrying suspenders,Rugged cotton material. Total set weighs 7 lbs., 7 ozs)

They have a few other packs for less, but I'm not sure of their quality.

Edit to add: The Alice packs WX2-108027 (used/without frame) are $15. Looks like they have shoulder straps (many used ones don't).

Hey Mac, check Major Surplus. They usually have some pretty good deals and med. alice packs are usually a staple for them.

Besides the alice packs, I recommend anything from maxpedition. Take a look at the maxpedition falcon II. Its big enough for a warm weather day pack or over night bag.

Texashiker - I know that you have not read the polite requests to go to the Introduction section and tell us about yourself - and apparently you did not read the original post of this thread either where it said:

Just adding that I use a medium ALICE and love it. I do recommend replacing the straps with MOLLE straps, though.

I posted a thread in the introduction after reading a request in a reply to one of my post.

The man asking for opinions, I posted mine. My first recommended pack is the ALICE, after that, its Maxpedition.

If you say so. I thought he was asking for suggestions and specifically said Maxpedtion was out of the budget. I probably read it wrong. My apologies.

I would think you can get a big bang for your buck with it.
    Read closely. It says ALICE...TYPE
    That mean Chineez imitation junk.
Most of these surplus dealers are dirtbags.

Try ebay and see if you can get some older Kelty or Jansport rigs. I used to see them for $10 to $20 and they'll do fine for what you are doing.

I'm glad you know most of the surplus dealers in the U.S. - Rather a broad generalization wouldn't you say?

It's also good to know that E-Bay only provides genuine quality materials. Thanks.

I agree with several others here,I have a medium alice ruck, frameless, and it has not failed me in ten years. To me it's the perfect pack, though i'm sure some might disagree. It's cheap, rugged, and last. What else could u want/need.

Mac the one that Crash posted in post#11 has some really good prices on medium and large alice packs. If they are Chinese counterfeits I'll eat one or two of them. At least the pics are of the Genuine article, and a really good price.

I like to use the pack liners for this. They haul a lot of stuff and they pack down small in a thigh pocket when empty. I use this set up a lot to haul water in Platypus bags. Mac
That is a heck of a good idea, I like it, gotta work on that.
    Thanks
I like the ALICE also, home bob is one, with canteen combo.

Has anyone found a good source for pack liners? I lucked into a good one for my large Alice but the two mediums I ordered were older than dirt, had glue flaking off and smelled to high Heaven!

Try cheaper than dirt.com,they have mil- surplus ,molle gear too, very reasonable.

No mediums on Crashes post and nothing on Cheaper Than Dirt.
