Gun Blue on an old pump action .22
Got bored the other evening and reblued my Stevens 1907 .22 pump action. I am gonna call it camo. Might follow it with an acorn rub then it'll be a "camo Coot". No disrespect Coot, just jokin' around!

Is that blued or case hardened?

I took it down to the metal with with fine paper and polished with steel wool. I followed that with "Birchwood Casey" gun blue and just drug a Qtip accross the shiny metal surface and streaked it on purpose. Same way I paint my Duck Boat...if you know what I mean?Originally Posted by SARKY

Looks cool CB but from the pics it looks only partly blued/stripped and the rest of metal unprotected , correct me if i am wrong and give more detail cause i would like to try dif patterns on a gun or two - thanks Gutshot
All your really doing with blueing is controlling rust. It is why I said an Acorn rub if you payin' attn. anyhow...

Yeah i sorry i guess i didnt see that part , maybe i'll have to try playing around with it on a couple of fal mags needing some re-blue
The acorn rub was something an ole coot from WV posted. I have studied the older methods. Some are more like browning than blueing. What Coot said was just hull the acorn and rub it on the metal. It keeps the shine down and slows the rust same as gun blue. There still is no substitute for a proper cleaning and oiling.

Cowboy, that sure looks nice. Almost like a worn char coal case hardened reciever. The lighter metal looks to have taken on a patina of sorts. That should protect it a good bit. Nice work. Are you taking orders yet. Just joking. I have an old 1977 Marlin 336 dear hammer that would look great wearing that skin. She is almost worn to the bone. Possibly I'll try something similar rather than shelling out $150.00 for a decent hot blue job. Maybe I'm just a goof but I never really got good results with large parts and cold blue. On small parts I've done O.K. Large parts, no luck. Stay safe brother.
