    Default Hey All, Aussie 'ere

Hey, i'm new to this site and thought this would be the perfect place to post my first post, not that i normally post in this section of other forums i've been on, but because this seems like a very welcoming forum and i'd really love some help on a few things...

So i'm 16 stocky build 1.8m (6foot) 75kg (165lb) and have really started to get into this whole 'Survival' thing, sorry to put it like that, it's just how i see it atm.

I've read a few books on people surviving out in the wilderness in many different situations and come from a Aboriginal background so have some basic knowledge, but would like to look further into this and am looking where to start?

I plan to research and practice heaps of the basics to begin then move onto edible plants and what not around my area.

I'm doing this to start because i want to see how long i could survive out in the wild sometime after learning the basics and hopefully keep improving until i'd be fine in a real life survival situation (plane crash, stranded baot etc.)

Thanks to everyone for reading, any positive comments appreciated =]

    Thanks again.

Welcome home. Well, the first thing I would suggest is to take full advantage of your background. If you come from an Aboriginal background then you probably have elders that know how to survive in Australia. Talk to them and, if possible, go out with them and have them show you. There is nothing that can compare with a mentor.

This test is usually pass/fail. The bad part is, if you fail you don't get a second chance. Just a thought.

Good point although not many elders are near me that i know of, and those who are are females who did not hunt but crafted and i guess collected, on second thoughts maybe they'd be helpful, collecting plants for eating/medicine can make or break your survivability.

About the whole going out to the wild, it'd only be for 1-2weeks through the holidays or something to get a feel for it after heaps of training my techniques, for things such like building traps/snares, fire-making, building equipment (bows-arrows-bone/rock knives etc.) and making shelter.

It'd me merely a test to see how i coped, how my skills that I'd learnt would preform in a real life situation aka I'll only be bringing the clothes on my back, or maybe a little supplies ( knife, cord/wire, extra clothes [gloves perhaps, becomes chilly down here] etc.)

Thanks for the warm welcoming guys =].

As soon as I've got some spare time i plan to start practicing dead-fall traps and snares, perhaps setting some around my bushland to see what i could catch.

I'm quite optimistic about dead-fall traps though, I mean, they must work because everyone seems to have knowledge of using them, it's just that if the rock/log is heavy enough to kill something by crushing it, would it not squish the meat making it quite hard to deal with afterward?

    Cool Hi & Welcome!

"Ow ya doin' mate?" 1st off, I noticed that at 16 you didn't try to come off as a "know-it-all"; I'm glad to see that. We have other Aussie members here, & quite possibly a Kiwi or two. Maybe you guys can help one another out, via posts, given your geographic location. Just a thought.

Thanks that sounds like a good idea, i'll perhaps make a thread on it tonight on something like ' Australians wanting to find out more about their culture ' or something =d.

"I noticed that at 16 you didn't try to come off as a "know-it-all"" < This is mainly because I'm not really like that as a person, there's no point acting like something your not, especially in a situation like this because you'll only be lying to yourself and if you had no experience and went off alone into 'the wild' you could perish easily.

Note: The other main experience's I've had besides what I've said in my first post (not much) is that i did archery for around a year getting into quite a few competitions and what not, though most the time i was shooting a recurve with a mounted sight. I did try a longbow a few times at 50lb pull and found it really great, the light bow felt so good compared to me 1.5-2kg bow I'd been using, and felt much more natural, so i plan to either bow or make on for hunting later on =], or i could use my heavy $1000 bow... but it doesn't seem worth it, it would be much to easy to kill game.

Yet you'd be surprised how many numpties come on here & do just that; we even had one recently from your country; (Aussie accent.) "Got 'is knickers in a twist when we called 'im on it!" Anyway, you are 100% correct as "survival" is NOT some kind of TV game show, but the difference between life or death! If there's anyway we can help out, just ask!

Welcome!! I for one appreciate your openness and honesty. It's really refreshing to see someone your age coming in with an humble attitude and asking questions, instead of telling everyone you know this and that and next week you are going off to stay for a year in the wild.(that happens, really it does) I really would be interested to see what you find out from your elders. Different cultures have different methods that all work but are different and the more you know..... the more you can use.
