Lookin' good!
A few months ago I made my own charcoal for the forge and although it burned faster I liked it better.

I'm going to play around with making charcoal on the Jamboree next week. I'm going to try a similar method to the one I use for making char cloth with a little bigger can. I'll let you know how it works.
I finally settled it with myself and fired the leafspring knife!

Back up did you see the sparks?
Before I quenched it, I got it red hot, non-magnetic.

Nice job. Were you able to get it to non-magnetic?
Crash,
It would reach Non-Magnetic in the coals with the blower on high. Try to pull it out and bouncing back and forth up and down the blade I'd get a pull. I did this several times untill it was just right and quenched it!

Looking forward to seeing it finished. Nice job.
Trying to sharpen it now and um well I am gonna need one heck of a stone... It is hard and i am pretty sure it has a backbone! It is exactly what I wanted it to be! WSDFGHJK!!!!

I should post a pic of trying to sharpen it....I am not needing any more Carbon, an old Chevy !!!USA!!! leaf spring! Remember we used to make steel from Iron Ore not scrap...

It is looking like I may have to temper it to sharpen it. I left the edge about the thickness of a dime to ensure it wouldn't warp and now a file or wetstone won't touch it. Any ideas? I don't want to temper it if I don't have to. Maybe I should though... I am surprised at the hardness it is unbeleivably hard. Did any of you have to temper after heat treat?

Bench grinder of sander if you have one, just keep it cool by continually dipping in water.
It took the smooth pad on the grinder to get an edge back started, Thanks Crash! Next I followed up with 2 hrs on a wetstone. Still wondering about tempering though...I can't tell if it is brittle? It is too thick to flex... so maybe it ain't gonna bend anyhow. I'd hate to temper and loose the edge it has now...Guess I will have to choose.. any thoughts from you guys?

CS - as you know, I am new to this as well. From my understanding - you can soften it up to make it easier to put an edge on it, but then you will need to harden it again and run the same risk that you were concerned about that caused you to leave it a little thicker. For the thinner blades that I have made I got them pretty sharp before hardening, but with the thicker ones - it takes longer in the forge to bring it up to temp. For that reason I did not want to overheat or melt the edge so I left them thicker as well. Don't know if that is right or not, just the way I did it.
I suggest replacing those gloves with long MIG welding gloves even the cheap $8 for 2 pair ones would protect you better... if you like the thin ones then maybe some nice TIG welding gloves with sleeves like you got
Awesome project, looking forward to final results.
Any concern about burning your house down doing it on an`ol wood dry deck?

I'm not going to swear to this but I think the harder the metal the more brittle it is. Kinda' like a file really hard easy to snap. Bayonets in the military were the same way but they weren't too hard to sharpen. I sharpened a whole bunch when Grenada went down, and we thought we might be going...made the Armorer mad he had to dull 'em when we didn't go.
I've got the same hair dryer! Hey, I was accused of stealing the Mrs' where did you get yours?
A friend of mine just made me a foot switch for my rig. I haven't tried it yet but, I think it'll be a good addition. I should be able to turn off the air and conserve the coals while I bang some steel. This might be something you would want to consider.
I kinda stole it from the Mrs.. she bought the deluxe travel size and luvs it.. anyway we were melting some metal and....

Mighty fine looking forge !! I gotta ask(its the noob in me), but whats the reason for the mortar(or concrete), just a heat separator(so to keep the table to conducting the heat away) or what ??
