Best wilderness shelter

If you are talking about shelter in general......build somthin that protects you from the possibility that it could rain or there is snow or there is a really hot sun above you ...... Shelter is what protects you from the elements and what the elements have in store for you...... so in summary if you ar not in a cold climate you need a "lean to" or a "debris hut"

Trax - That's a great idea. I seem to remember that from somewhere long ago but I'm sure glad you posted it. My son and I were yackin' last night about polishing our winter skills. Keeping the saw sharp. Talked about this very subject and had decided on a debris shelter but I think I might try your suggestion. It's something different and piling material on top should insulate as well as a debris hut but with more room inside.

I reckon I would go with a lean to made of nice thick evergreens inside and out. That is for the east coast where I would probably be. An overhang or a shallow cave with an evergreen lining but whatever it would be the nice green trees.

I lived in a cave in the Wyoming Wind River range for 2 summers (mid-May - early-Sept). That was the best time I have had in the wood in the lower 48.

It stayed 55 degrees inside and was a very comfortable shelter/living quarters.

For winter, I make a snow trench. Boughs are laid in the bottom, about a foot or more. Boughs, and a tarp if I have one, are laid on the top of the trench. It makes a warmer shelter than a tent. Just be sure to bring a bottle to relieve yourself - cause you're sure to have to go - if you didn't.

For late autumn, when it is cold, but before the snow, make a lean-to with about a foot of boughs on top. Make a mattress of a foot a boughs below. Get under the lean-to and kick out the supports. You will be covered with boughs above and below and - eventually - you'll warm up.
