    Default "Cash for Clunkers"

"Cash for Clunkers" - an interesting read.

Nobody will convince me that the fuel savings anticipated by this program will outweigh the actual environmental cost associated with destroying a good vehicle and manufacturing a new one.

This is a wasteful program (what else would you expect from the government?) that removes many affordable decent used cars from the used car market, thus denying their availability to people who can't afford more. Just another example of how the government is not in tune with reality or the economic circumstances of the general public.

BTW - watch the video showing how they disable (destroy) the perfectly good engine of these supposed "Clunkers."

    Hmmmm.
So if these same people were in control of health care, I wonder how many people would be labeled as "clunkers"?

....and how long did that program last, before they had to throw more money at it, than they expected???

I wonder what the effect will be on steel.....Last year scrap steel got all the way to nearly $0.50 per pound. I wonder what after effect it will have on steel manufacturing in the US.
Keep in mind the problem may be extremely complicated, though the "Fix" is often simple...

You should have been there, the day that I argued with a leftist that we should eat welfare breeders. I argued that it would help the economy, the people that really needed help, and reduce humanity's carbon footprint.

Of course I wasn't serious, but my solution solved, or at least helped with, most of the problems being discussed, at the time. LOL

Cool And if that ain't enough...

Seems that somebody has found a loophole on the "destroying" portion & is making a killing selling the clunkers, working engine & all, to other countries.

I am always amazed that such well educated people can come up with such a stupid idea. example: Take a reasonably new (5-6 years old) vehicle in good condition(also assume it meets the criteria for the program) that you had no reason to replace . You purchase a new vehicle and get the "clunker" bonus. The payback in gas savings no where equals the additional cost of taking on a new car payment (conservatively 300 to 400 $ per month), even if it gets 10 or so miles per gallon more than your "clunker".
Maybe I am missing something, after all, I do use "old math"

Wait a minute everyone, you're hacking on a project of great importance. The Cash for Clunkers program was part of the Stimulus Package, to infuse money back into the economy as quickly as possible. Environmental or economic consequences are of little importance. Your duty as a citizen is to take the money as your dixie cup, go below deck and start bailing all this water off the Titanic. Don't ask questions, just bail as fast as you can or this ship is going down.

Compared to the bilge pumps already assigned to the banks and loans to the auto industry, you won't really help that much by spending more, but at least you'll feel like you're doing something and you get this great commemorative dixie cup to keep after the crisis is over.

What's a couple billion for the peasants so they can drive new shiny cars when AIG is going to cost us over $170 billion by the time it's all put to bed? Just another drop in the bucket on this already sinking ship...

Hitting a little close to home with that one. I always heard if you add ignorance
and education that equals stupidity and as the old saying goes "you can't fix
stupid" so stupid runs for public office, and the efforts of dumb & dumber get
them elected. Now just where do most of us fit into this equation ?
