Thread: Ranger Ready?

    Default Ranger Ready?

    Howdy All,
Just thought about today and was curious about ya'lls perspective. I'm a Park Ranger, and today I had to go to a class with another Ranger in a small town an hour and a half away. My partner stopped by to pick me up this morning and I open the door and throw my grab bag in the back of the van and there is her grab bag as well.
Mind you we are in major cities, traveling on the interstate for an expected 8 hour day, and were prepped like were going up on the mountain for a 3 day rescue, it's kinda second nature for us.
Just curious, do ya'll do similar things for a day trip in the family van, or shopping trip in the company vehicle?

I do if I'm going out of town. "Chance favors the prepared mind". I used to live in Colorodo and traveled all over that state as well as parts of Wyoming and Western Nebraska in the Insurance buisness. As a "Boy Scout" I believe in being as prepared as I can!

I also live in an urban environment and, yes, I think the "essentials" bag needs to be in the vehicle even if you're going to the corner Starbucks. I see that as no different than lap and shoulder restraints, airbags or anti lock brakes. It's one more safety feature that is there if you need it. The difference is in what my vehicle bag contains vs. what I carry in the field. Customize it for you environment and add or delete as you need to. For example, if you're running around town you need some basics, taking that 1 1/2 hour trip you add to it, taking a week's vacation you add more and adjust all that depending on season.

lol Sarge I thought you got kicked out for a fight! (I read it in the forum but if that was someone else then oops!)

On subject, I keep my kit handy but I don't throw it in the car very often. just if there are storms or a longer trip. I usually get too lazy to go pick it up...

    Cool Huh?

I have no idea what you're referring to, SM, but no, I'm still here, at least for now. I keep a small survival kit under my front seat, plus what I carry in my fanny pack & on my person. On my belt is at least a "swiss knife" and possibly a "multi tool".

I have a decent medical kit in the car & truck. Always in any weather take a couple of bottles of water. I think I said before my favorite carry gun is a Beretta 45 but I leave it at home and always have a Walther PPK/S in the car and a S&W model 60 in the truck. I NEVER pull my pants on without my SAK & SOG in my pockets. I skip the water if I am by myself, but NOT the other. Guess this is overkill for a 15 mile drive, so what if I am PARANOID!!!

He meant kicked out of Boy Scouts over a fight Sarge, that was me SM.
And since that day, I have to say I have nothing but the utmost respect for that organization, my own mis-adventure notwithstanding. Nevertheless, I seem to have developed a pretty good set of wilderness survival skills without their nurturing guidance. Always have gear.....try driving across Manitoba north to south in the winter time and ask yourself if you should have survival gear.
some fella confronted me the other day and asked "What's your problem?" So I told him, "I don't have a problem I am a problem"

I agree with Smok 110%. My Trek pack is always with me, I even have 2 bags of CELOX and 2- 6" Army compression bandages in there at all times. My friends call it "The MacGyver Van". You never know what you may come across, accidents etc.
