I love coffee when I'm out but lugging a pot around when you are backpacking can be a problem. The solution? Make your own pot.

But, but....a strainer isn't all crafty and hands on. You can't build a strainer in the woods.
(sniff. Wipes tear) You can't use a knife to build a strainer.......I'm gonna cry.

I am always fascinated by those that can do fine woodwork. It certainly takes a skill and temperment (and really neat tools) to do it.

Well.....maybe "fine" woodwork isn't the correct term. Let's just say we know how to cover up rough work. Everyone is a framer. A finish carpenter just knows how to camouflage.

Yes, 2 dumb, we all know about Folger's Singles. However, this thread was about making things. Creating something of value. Completing a task requiring skills above those of a paramecium. Using wood for something other than covering the top of your neck. All things you've never done before...........

Having given this post a second look I have to admit I think my first conclusion was wrong. I pictured the frame fixed together and thought to myself it doesn't save much space. But now if it was a brake down design then you'd really have something. I use one of the old perculators when I camp and it takes up some space. Knowing I have to have my coffee in the morning for everyone who is around me that mornings sake then yeah a brake down design 2 sides a top and bottom some studs and wing nuts and now you have a easy to pack frame! I do have a way to improve your cowboy coffee. Take some cheese cloth large enough to hold the amount of ground coffee you want to use. Place the coffee on the cheese cloth and tie it closed with dental floss. Imagine a large tea bag. Toss it in the coffee pot while the water is still cold. When the steam starts to rise your coffee is done.

That way you don't have to drop a stick in it (or anything else) to get the grounds to fall out to the bottom of the pot.

Never thought of that Rick! sounds like it will work, I'll try it on my next outing till I know it works it will be best for everyone involved if I bring my perculator!
