Thread: Seed storage

    Default Seed storage

Is it safe to store seeds in the freezer if you wrap them in several layers of heavy duty aluminum foil? I would leave them in their packets too.

You can store them in the freezer as long as they are dry. Probably good to put them in and air tight/vapor proof container.

I don't know if I would freeze them but they stay perfectly viable in the refrigerator for several years. The fridge is low humidity and cool, which are the two things that you need to have to keep seeds. I've planted lots of 3 and 4 year old seeds that I keep in my refrigerator in the garage. After 4 years I've noticed a sharp drop off in viability. In fact, the 4th year is sort of hit and miss. But three years doesn't seem to bother them.

Thank you for the responses. I think I will wrap them in several layers of foil, then put them in a plastic container in the refrigerator.

You don't even have to wrap them. I leave them loose in their original package and store them on the top shelf of the fridge door. For the ones I've grown and harvested the seed then I drop those seeds in a little plastic baggie. Seeds are pretty hardy little guys. They have to be to make in the wild.
