Default Your weakness in your last outing?

Think back to your last outing... what was your most weakness? Was it that you was not fit, lack of fire starting skills, unable to find food, unable to find your way? What do you need to improve on?

My last outing, I was trying to test what I just learned about edible plants. I got so confused on what was what plant. I wanted just to identify them correctly. I decided that I need to find a better way to memorize what is what. I am also looking to find some local classes that teach plant identification with hands on.

Day trip back up into Pine Log. Followed the creek, around lunch time decided to make a fire and transport it 20 feet to my little camp area.

Getting the spark and char was no problem, igniting the tinder however was. I was trying to use what I found on the ground or in trees.

Finally got it when I pulled off some dead bark. It lit my fire bundle and I did transport it, start the fire, and make the well needed cup of hot tea.

My big weakness is edible plants.

Made a lean-to in pure survival fashion. Didn't set up in time before dark so I had this annoying draft coming from under the backside.

Ba evil lister! Blister. New pair of boots not broken in nearly as well as I thought they were. Didn't have enough moleskin so I had to improvise with duct tape. Didn't turn out too bad. I just cut a whole in the duct tape the size of the blister and applied it right over the mole skin. It took two applications of tape but between the moleskin and the tape it was thick enough to protect the blister. I now have extra moleskin in my kit, thank you.

    Red face Mine was...

My actual outing into the woods was looking for Morels last spring, Found 3 large ones right off the bat and decided to "really forage". Didn't find anymore but went through a lot of briar patches in the hunt, drat!

Quick funny on Morels. My wife and I spent a day in the woods looking for them and went home empty handed only to have my neighbor inform me he had two in his flower bed. Only two I got all day.

Tactital Tom - On the plant ID thingy. Go to the bookstore and get:

Edible Wild Plants - An Introduction to North American Species by Waterford Press. It's a laminated folding guide that's really pretty good. They also make one called Medicinal Plants.

The bible for our part of the country is a book titled Edible Wild Plants Eastern/Central North America. It's part of the Peterson Field Guides.

The pamphlets are about $6.00 each and the book is $19.00 or so but it has tons of information including illustrations, ways to use the plant and look a likes to be wary of.

I could always improve on map reading skills. Plant ID, and climbing skills.

Thanks Smok I'll have to look into that one. I have Simon and Schuster's Guide to Mushrooms. Mine is circa 1981 and pretty dog eared. They have a newer version out.

My weakness is that I have no sense of direction.I get turned around very easily.Never an issue when the Sun is shining,or I have a map and compass. Also,I'm presently in unexcusably bad physical condition.I need to deal with this ASAP.

Let's see, made a lean-to in the dark and during the night it fell over on me, like owl girl I got consumed on looking at everything else around me and exploring I waited to late to and next thing I know its dark. I can tell you what plants are edible and medicine and have done alot reading, but have a hard time telling them apart in the woods... just never spent much time on it I guess. Seems to me the pictures or drawings in books never look like what's actually in the woods.
And uh... lumpy they make a new fangled thing called a compass nowadays

There is no greater solitude than that of the Tracker in the forest, unless perhaps it's that of the wolf in the wilderness.

Another Canadian? Oh my God we got you guys surrounded! Welcome C-G.

My biggest weakness on a recent outing was not realizing how much people with me would need my help with the basics, as a guide/tracker/scout/leader, I have a responsibility for the people with me and I thought that a couple of them had more basic bush knowledge than they did. Pretty soon everything started to fall behind schedule, and our first night too, we wound up with a very drafty shelter because of setting up in the dark.
some fella confronted me the other day and asked "What's your problem?" So I told him, "I don't have a problem I am a problem"

Lumpy, don't worry about condition. The secret to getting rid of wrinkles as you grow older is to eat until you fill 'em out! BTW - I love that handle. Lumpy...yuck, yuck, yuck.
