Wild Weather

We had some unexpected wild weather this afternoon. Since I am out and about most days, I always pay attention to the weather forecast. I do the same thing when I go hiking or camping. Today’s forecast was calling for hot temps and a 10% chance of rain. While I was out doing some work in the yard conditions rapidly changed. From the first indications of changing weather until the winds picked up and lightning strikes were close by took about ten minutes. Some areas were pretty hard hit. The reason for the post is just to remind folks that while out in the woods – pay attention.

Those are some ugly clouds Crash,glad you are ok.

The slide show from the news site just shows pics of the water spouts and tornadoes (I think they said that three touched down). One of the crews was reporting on something (not storm related) when lightning struck about 50 feet from them. It took out power poles and lines. They couldn't move their vehicle because they were surrounded by downed power lines. They did get some good tape of the fire. The strike left a three foot hole in the pavement.

We had about 2" of partly cloudy. Sun came out this morning, then got dark and we had a "mystery" thunderstorm flooding viaducts and creeks. Forecast hasn't been right in weeks.

since the weatherman seems to be kinda confused lately, I've been trying to keep an eye on other indicators. I've been trying to find references on plant and animal behavior, and trying to see if they can tell me better than the weather channel. Since I'm not the well versed in all the signs I haven't noticed a lot, but I will say there have been a couple days where the squirrels and birds seem to know that somethings coming even though there's only a 10% chance according to the weather people.

Crash I have been going through this same thing. It is monsoon season June-October and it rains like hell most every day. It is sunny one minute and in ten minutes it is a torrent. I don't spend as much time in the forest during this season, but I still go out and plan to tomorrow. All one can do really is take rain gear, stay on high ground and out from under big trees. Thai people seem to not pay much attention to lightning. As a result many of them die from it every year.

A sililar storm coursed through SC yesterday. We lost power for about 3 hrs. and internet through the night. Internet just got restored. Definately makes you rethink some things left undone!

A water spout is a tornado over water and they captured the vortex passing over them!!!! What and incredible (and stupid) shot. They could have been killed!

This is spooky... Heck of a storm here yesterday, rain was torrential and blowing a hoolie. Power was out for about 6hrs and guess what? I used the little esbit to cook dinner and lit a few candles. My small part of preparedness came in handy! It's also spurred me on to do more.

Positive reinforcement. It's not always about bugging out. Most of the time it's about convenience.

The really spooky thing was I'd only bought the stove yesterday morning when I went shopping! Who'dve thought I'd need it so soon.

There has been a lot of freakish weather all over the world. Flash flooding, typhoons and earthquakes. They are definitely occurring more frequently. Flooding seems to be the major issue in the eastern part of the US. We had some really bad flooding a few years ago near me. I knew people who were out of their homes for weeks. Even that didn't wake up most people as to the need to prepare.

Wychwood only gave you half the story here.

Wychwood overheard a couple of neighbors making fun of the Esbit and the Candles. So, during the height of the storm, wychwood took a 12 gauge and blew out a power transformer just up the road........

Actually I neither have a shotgun or emptied one into the transformer... a horse was electrocuted in the debacle and the village was very dark for a very long time.
