ID this military mess kit

I have this US military mess kit that looks very much like this:

But it is engraved with either "1907" or "1917". My grandpa was in the US Coast Guard during WW2, and my uncle was in Vietnam. Could it be WW2 or Vietnam era?

Vietnam era and current day. That's what I have now that was issed to me in 2003 when I joined. WWII one is much different.

Bulrush - My guess is the number is 1947 or later. The picture you posted is the M-1942 style mess kit. The earlier version was the M-1932. The only difference between them was the 1942 version was made of stainless steel and the handle was a bit wider. It could certainly be WWII or Viet Nam depending on the date of manufacture.

Vietnam era had lots of WWII leftovers, rations included. Probably made in '42. They are pretty well all you need and are sturdy. Don't think you would need explosives to boil water but I guarantee you can.
