Knife Making Tips

Having finished my first knife project, I still had a lot of questions. Sometimes I felt as thought I didn’t know enough to even know what questions to ask. Many of you have provided great advice, and I thank you for that. Anyway – I noticed in his profile that Gryffynklm had an interest in blacksmithing. I’ve been kind of picking his brain, and he has been extremely helpful. Thanks for that Gryffynklm. Here’s one link that he passed along to me that I found very helpful. How much of a mess I can make with a small belt sander. But seriously, and I'm not sure if it was a suprise, but the flat grind was one of the more difficult parts. Probably partly due to the equipment I had and in most part due to my lack of experience. Based on a recommendation from Gryffynklm I'm going to try a different burner (the larger torch that you see used in roofing) and not making the cavity of the forge quite as small.

Thats Jtodd he is a very good knifemaker. He also does forging now. I used that and a few other tutorials when I was learning to make knives. You are definitely on the right track!

Thanks. Those tutorials answered some questions I had. A different tutorial said to put an edge on the knife before treating. This tutorial looks like you put the edge on after treating. Is that right?

Rebel - I'm not sure of the order of the videos. Maybe Panch0 could or Karl could jump in.

It is recommended to leave the thickness of a dime at the edge before heat treating. When you are doing the final edge bevels do not let the edge or tip burn. It will get thinner when you do the scale removal and finall polishing. After that is done I put blue painters tape then put the final edge.

It's too late for my file knife. I think I'll still try to temper it with the edge on and see what happens.
