If this violates the forums political rule I apologize and understand the deletion of this thread.

The law has passed through congress giving you a tax credit for up to 4500 dollars. I understand the laws benefits (increased sales of new fuel efficient cars, less dependence on foreign oil, more business at car lots that have been idle for to long.) I have an issue with the fact that the law directs car dealers to destroy the trade in vehicles. So in theory I could trade in a perfectly good used vehicle and it would be destroyed? I think this will cause a big deficit in reliable, affordable, used cars. What do you guys think?

I don't think your post violates any rules here........

Anyway, the destruction policy is foolish. Those trade-ins would be a great step up for many people with cars now being held together with bailing wire and duct tape - folks who will never be able to afford a new car. The policy is wasteful - plain and simple. Sometimes our leaders claim to have an understanding of the economic plight of the average guy, but in reality they have no clue at all.

I don't see your post as violating any rules. We talk about updates in gun laws - this really is not that different. This is a bad law (cash for clunkers) IMO. How many people are going to tow junk (maybe purchased at the junkyard for parts) to a dealership to get a $4,500 credit on the new car they were planning on buying. It also puts other manufacturers at a disadvantage (maybe that's the goal).

We have a similar system over here. The car companies soon cottoned on to a dodge though. They've now increased their prices by the grant offered by the govt so they pocket the difference and joe bloggs is no better off!

Hey! Here's a thought. Take the $1 Billion and develop a diesel engine that gets 100 MPG for heavy equipment. That would save us an ocean of fuel.
