    Default Tool Kits

All the equipment in the world won't help us survive if we can't maintain or fix it. Right? Having this philosophy, I have tool/maintenance kits in each vehicle, in my work shop (duuh....of course, that's the purpose of a shop, right?) in my garage, office, etc. I also like to have "dedicated" kits as well.

This morning, the Honey and I bought a John Deere mower/tractor. Of course, I bought some (actually alot of) extra stuff with it. Oil, belts, filters, ignition key, mini grease gun, extra headlights, a few wrenches.......

I usually try to keep a specialized tool kit for the major products I purchase - I like to keep everything together in a "dedicated" kit. I have one for my snowblower (lots of extra shear pins) my generators, my furnace, my pumps....

Question. Does anyone else do this, or was there any truth to the "suggestion" this morning that I may be a bit anal?

I don't. I have a LOT of tools. Some are much older than me some are modern gizmos. But They are all in their own little beds in the tool boxes in the garage. I used to work on my own cars but no longer. Between the old fingers not doing what they are supposed to and NASA adding their analytic frocked delimiter hydrogen pulasotor under the hood I'm not certain anymore if I'm looking at the engine or it's looking at me. I'm pretty certain it has more memory than I do.

Nope. I just hit speed dial on the cell phone today and say come get it.

Gotta concur, well not with the anal part.
My family has used specialized tool kits for years. When the tractors broke couple klicks out, you don't wanna be totin 50 lbs of tools when 10 is all that you need. Tool boxes are marked according to what they are for. Mower, motorcycle, etc....

I guess the term "modern" is relative to your age, huh? Rick's "modern gizmos":

I have some that might be that old. I also have many that I've built myself (yeah, they work, too). A lot with the name Craftsman on them. I'm hoping people will read that and just make the assumption.

Most of my tools are for wood working, stored seperately by use in man movable cabinets, framing (heavy type work) , cabinet work. Power tools are mostly battery (DeWalt) so there is portability with 15 spare batteries. Of course have mechanical tools for mower and snow blower. And each vehicle has a basic set of tools. And my wife DOES NOT know the total inventory (kept on a strict need to know basis )Your tendency towards multiple kits is not a bad thing (women never seem to agree on that point). I don't know many men that would say they have too many tools .

I am a woman...(big news flash there) and I do not yet, nor ever will have enough tools. Car tools, house tools, shed tools, garden tools, fishing tools, camping tools, garage tools, truck tools... and tools to tinker with the tools. Nope, not enough tools yet...

I have dedicated kits in the vehicles. I also have a dedicated kit with one of my cordless drills (level, screws, tape measure, bits, drivers, etc..). I have a general use toolkit in a shoulder pouch. I also still have my custom splicing seat (Small folding seat with a compartment in the bottom. This has crimpers, cutters, voltage tester, insulation stripper, semicon tool, elbow tit wrench, and a few other specialized high voltage splicing tools).
Splicing kit is for jobs like this:

I try, but often cheat and tools get mixed up. (Bicycle wrench may end up in truck tool box, etc.)

I do buy several cheap tools to keep in vehicles for emergencies. I can make up a better kit than the junk kits on the market and for much less.

I have separate boxes for different uses(IE Electrical/plumbing/carpentry/Etc), and a mechanical set. When traveling I throw a kit together and drag it along.

    I'm with you Ken...

I've got shelves all around my garage and there's a box here with weedwhacker stuff (trimmer line, oil, extra hoses, etc) and box there for tractor stuff (oil filters, fuel filters, belts, etc) and a box up there for my hurricane lanterns (extra wicks, funnels to fill with, extra glass globes, etc) and box down here for soldering (wire, brushes, flux, sparkers, etc)....

    you get the picture...

I always take too many tools. Old habit from when I was working to climb a hill, climb a 40ft pole and find I left something I just had to have. Small tools I always carried 3, one to lose, one to drop in the brush and one to actually use. I carry more on my ATV than in the wife's car, I am mechanically declining with new cars so why bother. I would also like to know why 1/4" drill bits disappear. If I need one I don't look, just go and buy a couple.
