Choosing a Sleeping Bag

im in the market for a new sleeping bag, looking for something thats light weight and not to pricey. it doesnt get to cold over here in so-cal and i plan on using it in the summer. anyone have any recommendations? i was also thinking about maybe just taking a wool blanket, not sure if that would do the job.

Not sure what you're looking for when you say light weight. I've got several bags. The lightest is a Slumberjack (40 degree rating) that weighs in at just over one pound. Wally World has some inexpensive bags (Coleman as Remy suggested) at good prices. Probably a little heavier, but not too bad.

I have froze my butt off many times in sunny southern California... When Hiking I use a North Face Blue Kazoo, and a thermarest old skool 3/4 pad. That pad makes a huge difference in comfort an d warmth.


When camping I use a big foam or Air mattress(Depends on whether we take the car or van) sheets and 2 blankets in a tent. That's pretty warm for me.

You need to decide if you want down or synthetic material. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Down is incredibly warm but it's a pain in the .. uh .. back when it gets wet.

There is a new rating system out called EN. It's short for European Norm 13537 technology. It's a rating system that's been in use in Europe for a while and some of the U.S. sleeping bag companies have converted to it. It covers quite a bit but the basics means if it says 20 degrees then it's 20 degrees. That's not always true with sleeping bags. So look for one that has been EN tested and you'll be assured that the ratings are accurate. You'll see a COMFORT, LOWER LIMIT and EXTREME ratings on the EN tag.

Think of a bag as an investment just like you would boots. It can make all the difference in a good night's sleep or staying warm and dry. Badawg is right on the mark about the sleeping pad, too. You can usually find military self inflating pads on eBay for 20 bucks or so plus shipping. They are usually Thermorest self inflating. I have two and they are the berries!
