Thread: Pride

    Default Pride

Ok, so, I took a daisy powerline up to my inlaws this weekend, but got rained out on any chicken hunting I had planned. Probably just as well. Come to find out recent gas drilling in the area has ALSO driven coyotes from the fringes into the actual neighborhood, and most of the hens have been picked off. The "flock" now consists of (from the glance I got shortly after the storms) like 6 roosters, maybe 3 hens, and a few surviving months old chicks.

ANYWAY, I left the powerline with my wife so she could teach all four of the kids how to shoot and just let them practice. It's the first time three of them have ever touched a "weapon" before.

My 12 year old step-daughter saw my wife out in the yard practicing about ten bb's into a session. She came out and asked if she could shoot. First time ever having a bb gun in her hands, and from 30 ft. put 80 out of 100 rounds in the sweet spot on a rabbit or squirrel paper target. OUt of the other 20, 16 were on the edge of the bullseye. Only four were pulled.

I'm getting her her own pink bb gun when I head back up, which she is totally stoked about, and probably the pink .22lr semi-auto from Mossberg for Christmas.

I'm also taking a couple realtor signs and some chem lights to hang from them to make for some interesting night shooting. Kids get a real kick out of watching the shower of fluid once the chem light has been punctured and gets hit. Wish I could find that stuff in jugs so I could fill water balloons with it for them to shoot at.

Oh, and my 6 yr. old made the comment "I'm gonna go in my room and do push-ups so I can hold that gun up longer!!!"

She sounds like a natural. Set up a board or canvas with small baloons filled with different colored paints. Let them create their own rifle art.

We usually take the kids out to the ranch and let them practice on a dead/bloated cow....they love it when one explodes.

A friend of mine went on a hunting trip in Africa. There were about eight people in the hunting party, a couple of guides, and about thirty aboriginals for carrying the supplies. They had killed an elephant and one of the guides explained that they would be spending most of the rest of the day there for the workers. They cut a large plug in the side of the elephant. In the heat of the day the inards were expanding --- a lot. The workers that had been keeping the buzzards away, allowed them in when the "balloon" was large enough. Buzzards pecking at large inards balloon that was under fairly high pressure.......feathers everywhere when it exploded.

O.k., wasn't sure if I should start another topic or use this one since my announcement is about pride for my child, too. So, I'm just gonna sneak it in here.

The USAClimbing rankings came out this week and my daughter is currently ranked #1 in the region (Utah, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho), and #11 in the NATION. Regional Championships are this weekend, so y'all wish her luck!

That's awsome A.S. Kids don't know about nature, guns, bush living, or anything we grew up with anymore.
I know it's just a bb gun, but that will get her outside, and who knows where that will lead.
Some university did a study and found that just going out in the woods helps autistic children cope with their disease. It also showed, kids had more self-esteme.

That's great M.M. That's what the world needs, kids getting out more.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

Yes ma'am, I second Crash's statement. Awesome accomplishment.

    @Chiye Tanka;
Thanks. I made her a deal to keep her interested. I hang ten empty beer/pop cans from a horizontal beam about 5 feet off the ground. She gets 12 pellets. If she can put a hole in each can with those 12 rounds we are going to the store right then to get that pink .22lr. If not, she gets to keep practising. Pretty good motivation for her to keep shooting. Good thing for me it's really windy most days right now, and she hasn't quite cottoned on to the fact that she needs to try it on a day where there's almost no wind.
