Stephen King once wrote a short story about a guy stranded on a desert island and had no food except..........himself. So he starts on his toes and works his way up. King said, at the end of the story, that he wanted to know how much a person could devour of themselves before they'd die, so he consulted a medical person for his facts. Pretty gruesome story. In his book: "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon", he tells about a 9 year old girl who gets separated from her mom & older brother on that big trail over in Maine and has to survive on the stuff in her daypack and what she has on. Again, a survival expert was consulted. I remember thinking, before I found out what the story was about, that it sounded really dumb. However it was very interesting and caused me to start thinking about "Survival" as a skill in itself. I highly reccommend it.
