Wildography ..Just what kind of work do you ? Here is one thing I have for you buy off the value menu you get more in two single hamburgers at a buck then in a double for three or four bucks.. As for weapons get a bushman knife by Cold Steel its under $20 and it will feat on to you walking stick , but make shore your stick has a rubber nob on it or it can be called a weapon and not the cain that it is..... With the knife on it that will give you a four foot reach . Here is another good one look up ( Koga SD or Kubotan) and learn to make it . It's just a 7 inch stick with a string on it so if you lose it no biggie but in a fight it can help a lot I have two on me all the time , but then I am old.....

Talking On The Road. . .

Sorry to hear about your predicament Wild.

I spent 8 years living "on the road" in my (full size Ford conversion) van. I traveled around, state-to-state, taking advantage of what this great land had to offer. There were times that I didn't have enough gas $$ to drive where I wanted, so I either walked or took the bus (Greyhound).

I also spent 2 summers and 1 winter living in a cave. Why? Cause I chose to. I really liked it, but F & W wardens found my little hideaway so I had to move out. Personally, I could have spent the rest of my life living in that cave, it was very comfy, but alas, I had to move on. . .

I taught wilderness survival & primitive living skills, or worked as day labor on construction crews which gave me many opportunities I wouldn't have had otherwise.

As far as moving back east, personally, I wouldn't recommend it. I have family and many friends that live back east and they tell me constantly how bad things are out there. I also know this to be true because I normally have many clients whom sign up for my survival & primitive living courses, but this year and last has shown a MAJOR reduction in "eastern clientele". 89% of my clientele last year was from UT, AZ, MT, CA, WA, OR, NM, TX. This year that number is 92%.

Now, about hitch-hiking. In today's world I wouldn't recommend doing it, it's WAY too dangerous! But, if you are set on doing it, the best advise I can give you is to try and get rides from "truckers". You have a better chance on arriving safe and alive than you do with someone in a 4-wheeler (driver talk for a car or truck).

That's the best advise I can give you. . .for whatever it's worth!

Good luck to you whatever you decide to do!

Here's a suggestion that my wife came up with.

As you seem to be a religious person why not volunteer to go abroad and help those folk even worse off than you are now and get your board and lodging paid at the same time.

Weather the bad times/uncertainty doing good things for people and come back when the coast is clear, so to speak.

I don't know how practical that all would be but I said I would suggest it to you.

I spent the entire winter of 2002 in boston without a job, camping in the woods with three daughtrs and a wife is tough, nobody out there wants to help out.homeless people are treated like lepers.even the athaurities single out the homeless as "extraordinary". employers turn away the jobs to the homeless.good luck man

some days i truely miss drifting, when i look around at all the crap i have accumilated in the last 13 years it baffles me, a quote from the movie white oleander whith michell pfiffer (hubba hubba) her daughter was talking to cole hauser as they are staring at a wild fire coming towards them she says"my mom used to make me practice packingand make me choose what i would take ,she would tell me if you were truly brave you would take nothing."
if i had to do it all over again i would stay hobo(nell disrgard this part) i love my wife and would never trade her for nothing and will protect her to the end but i often wonder about things, my problem is i think to much, the mines up here are starting to do 3 month shut downs and who knows if/when they reopen at what capacity, to me the mines here are a great indicater of the world, you need our precious metals to produce anything.when i was a pup , i grew up admiring guys who lived in school buses and was nomands , even bikers who lived the 1 percent lifestyle of freedom and a freind who owned a small rv and drifted, collecting and selling junk always seems to have a bank roll on him, the thing with art and jimbo, and willy and doc, is they all seemed happy all the time.
    good luck

Happiness is a state of mind. You know that, WE. When we stop worrying about what we don't have and learn to admire and appreciate the things we do have then happiness is pretty easy to capture. Or course, liking who you are also helps a lot.

Do not ask for assistance in a shopping area. Most will just run you off and think, looks we have a new one in town. If they don't immediately run you off, then the cops may be on the way.

However, truck stops and interstate/highway gas stations are a safer bet. They tend to be more tolerant of your situation. Don't ask everybody you come across, it will make you look desperate, and their tolerance will fade.

This cannot be echoed enough, stay clean, polite, and presentable. From a friends experience, wet naps will only remove the surface dirt, they will not remove enough oils or bacteria to make you look or smell clean. My friend was stuck in NO after Katrina. When he was evacuated after three weeks he thought wet naps would make him clean enough that no one on the bus would complain. He turned out to be the one everybody complained about. So you may want to carry a bar of anti-bacterial soap with you.

Good luck, I may be six months behind you.

That is a really good idea. Or, even volunteer to help in places in the USA that are rebuilding/recovering from disasters.

A couple of things come to mind. You mentioned you were divorced and had a daughter. Do you see her, and would moving to NC or the west coast take you farther away? I'm remarried, and my 8 year old son lives with his mom in the same area where I live. I'd only consider moving away from him if it were absolutely necessary. Otherwise, I'd do all I could to stay in the area. A follow up question - do you pay child support? If you're wandering/drifting, would you still be able to pay?

Wildography, I know things look tough, but you've also got a world of opportunity facing you here. Lots of good suggestions already, I see. I did a lot of 'drifting' when I was younger, now I'm like WE, I look at all the stuff I've sort of accumulated and think "what the h*** am I doing with all this?" I also agree with WE about Michelle Pfeiffer (hubba hubba) Now that I'm probably in trouble with MDN, WE...mine's are usually the last to respond to a recession and the last to recover, interesting to me that they're already starting the shutdowns. It hasn't happened here yet, but I guess it's coming. My son works as a mechanic in a mine up north I hope him and his family don't wind up in a jam.
some fella confronted me the other day and asked "What's your problem?" So I told him, "I don't have a problem I am a problem"
