Default Help me get a Ham radio license.

Hey Guys! So, reading alot of cool stuff about Ham radios is great. My interest is growing about learning more and getting a radio and a license. What is my first step? I really dont have much experience outside of work (police radio). This is a different ball game. Can someone give me play by play of what I should do next. I am in South Texas, I dont know if licenses differ from state to state. Thanks.

No it is a federal license. I think there are old threads on this subject. If not go to: www.SurvivalBlog.com

I believe Ken has or had one. He can probably let you know what the process is.

My cousin is a ham...and has a radio, too. He talks all over the world on his. If Ken can't steer you straight I'll contact my cousin. I don't think Morse code is even required any more.

Here's a question to Vika or Ken. Is there law or regulation that would prevent me from purchasing a radio just in case? I mean it doesn't take a lot of savvy to listen or to talk (no offense to hams of the world). If things were bad (think Katrina) I doubt the FCC would come wading out to my house to confiscate my radio. In the meantime I might be able to call for help or at least listen in to what's going on. License or not.

    Default amateur radio

amateur radio licensing is regulated by the FCC. Licenses are Technician, General, Extra, Morse code is not required. Suggest you go to Amateur Radio Relay League, www.arrl.org, for more information
