My cousin designed this for the DOD for his graduation thesis. Using a paintball gun, a tripod and computer optics he basically provided "proof of concept".

i.e. it would autotrack and fire on a target.

That's pretty normal for any dog when someone breaks into the house. Folks think a big dog is a deterrent but they aren't.

A finding further supported by earlier research (Buck, Hakim, & Rengert, 1993). His research made a surprising discovery that deadbolts were somewhat unimportant in deterring a criminal. More important was the type of door the burglar was confronted with.

My "watchdog" is a retired Vietnam Veteran who is a VERY light sleeper. I have grown new gray hairs instantly over the sound of the action being worked on the 30.06!! I work LATE and often come home when he is asleep. If he was having the dream, he forgets where he is. I just tell him to stand down. Then he remembers who, what, where, and when. Then we drink a pot of coffee to settle down. Who needs a watchdog?!

The door is just one part. It should have a reinforced frame. One method of doing this is to replace one screw in each of the hinge plates with a 2 1/2 inch screw. This will reach past the door frame into the 2x4 studs behind the door frame.

The strike plate is the metal piece on the door frame that the deadbolt "throw" goes into. It should be 4 or more inches in length and be mounted with two or more case-hardened screws at least 3 inches long.

The best lock is a deadbolt lock with a captive keylock. It will offer substantial protection over a single cylinder lock. Some even incorporate a removable thumblock.

According to FBI statistics, the overwhelming majority of burglaries, in all sections of the country, involved "unlawful entry", which means entry was gained without the use of force: usually through unlocked doors or windows.

So no matter how good that door is, if it isn't locked it isn't a deterrent.

Very true Rick. One thing I always did when I was living on my own and renting apartments was replacing the door locks with ones I already had. In the neighborhoods where I lived anyone could have the key to your apartment. The Landlords never cared if I changed the locks, as long as I put the old ones back in when I moved out.

Exactly what I've done with my kids. As long as the front office has a copy of the key for the maintenance guys they don't seem to mind. Then just change them back when the contract is up.

This tidbit may not be worth mentioning, but just in case .........

If you replace existing screws with longer screws, make sure that you don't drill or screw trough any wiring in the walls. Quite often, light switches are located near doors, and if you don't KNOW where the wiring is, well, just be careful.

That's certainly a possibility. However, wiring is usually found to the outside of the King studs. The light switch will generally be mounted on the King. You want to anchor directly into the Jack studs.
