Personally, I don't use texting lingo. Number one it would take to long to figure most of it out. Number two I type without texting lingo out of courtesy to those who may read what I have written. I like to be understood by those around me and don't want want to labor those like me, who don't text. Grammar and spelling mistakes, typos.... If I can read it without having to read a post several times to figure it out no big deal.

For me it's respect and courtesy . I respect what you have to say and offer that respect by trying to be clear in my words. If thats old School like being self sufficient and doing things yourself. then so be it.

In one hundred years or more there could be a group on a forum like this talking about finding a pen or pencil and learning to use it, to actually write, with his hand. Does anyone have any paper? Paper? What's paper?

Sure, it makes the poster look lazy, but come on, I've read posts that were in full english with proper grammar that were harder to read.

Re-enactors have heard this one. I have heard this question below in WI, IL, IN, VA, and I'm sure the list doesn't stop there.

" Is that a real Fire?" I was baffled by the number of folks that ask that question at events until at Red Bud an event in Indiana. A man comes up to the fire and starts poking holes in the ground around the fire with a shepherds crook planter hook. We asked him what he was doing. His reply was that he was looking for the gas line. We all took a distance of about 20 feet and shouted "OK GO AHEAD". He paused turned a bit pink and walked away.

I guess folks are actually asking are you using propane or charcoal.

See, my point exactly. He used perfectly proper english until the last two lines, and I still have absolutely no idea what he meant by any of that.

I'm not sure what some codger crawling around a fire has to do with typing, and I'm not seeing the logical conclusion that you are apparently making, so, explain? Maybe put it in txt format or something.

I was trying to make the point that some times even with proper english and all that people have difficulty getting their point across.

"Is that a real fire" is a question I get asked almost at almost every event in front of a fire with a roast cooking. You can feel the radiant heat, see and smell the smoke, its obviously a real fire. Are they being a smart ***, stupid or not asking the correct question (not getting their point across despite a properly formed question)

Communication is some times difficult enough with proper english, remove reading a face to see the smirk, or the other cues from a face to face conversation and not knowing the person can lead to miss communication.

In my original post on this thread, where does it say anything about people with dyslexia or those whom are bad spellers? Last I checked. . .it doesn't!?

This is about people whom post using TEXTING LANGUAGE/ABBREVIATIONS and fail to punctuate their posts.

I, too have arthritis in my knuckles and bursitis in my shoulders, so that is a moot point. If I chose to, I could use speech-to-text instead of typing, but typing keeps my fingers nimble. If it gets too extremely painful to type, then I will switch to that method.

I guess I am just touchy on this subject. On another website some moderator made it his duty to be the "Grammar Patrol". He rode me about my grammar until I quit going to the site. I tend to bristle when I see it brought up. (I couldn't find a "cheers" smilie, so this will have to do).

I've spent time splicing on hooks in all kinds of weather for hours at a time only to have people drive up and complain and ask what's taking so long. Arthritis is no joke. I get cramps in my hands also. Knees and back aren't that great. I am one old guy that can remember crawling out on cross arms breaking ice with a line hammer. You got anything to say, say it. A couple of other men on here know where you are coming from. Hang in.

Thanks man. I have good days and bad days, but winters seem to have more bad days than not. Spring is coming though, so I am starting to be able to do more (without hurtin' so darn much).

BTW: I learned to climb on ice. I didn't even know what the "high-side" of a pole was, until spring thaw came around and I had to learn.

I view the people using texting abbreviations this way, I can figure out what they're writing, but with those of us still using a real language with real words (althought texting is probably becoming that) can they figure out what we're writing?
