I actually looked it up this morning. Went to the nearest one and it's closed. :-( However there is one on the local military base and my grandfather-in-law is ex-military so I may go down next time they go to the base to get groceries.

Uh, you might call before you go. The general rule is if they answer they are probably open if they don't they are probably closed. Just a thought.

Well I've got a line on a New With Tags Maxpedition Jumbo for about $65 w/shipping. I'm thinking I may go ahead and do it. My only worry is getting fatigued on one side or my shoulder hurting from holding the load. Any thoughts?

Since I had my conversation with Hopeak regarding the Fatboy vs the Jumbo I've started using the Jumbo more. I like it (mine is not loaded too heavy), but you've got a belt snap that can be used to relieve some of the weight.

I'll snap the pictures tonight at some point.

Awesome. I guess I didn't realize it had a belt snap, but if it does then I think it'll be perfect for me! Thanks again Crash!

Not the greatest pictures, but....The black one is the Fatboy and the Tan one is the Jumbo Versa.

This is the Proteus. It is pretty versatile in that it can be worn as a butt pack, a belt (as shown) can be run through it, or it has a carry handle and can be used as a range bag.

Back of the Jumbo - velcro belt attachment - the Fatboy has one as well (snap)

    Hope these help.

I decided to go ahead and get the Jumbo. I like to carry a decent amount of gear, even for a 1-day hike, and it will allow me that. I'll let you all know how I like it when it comes in and I load it up!

I went ahead and got the Jumbo. It's great! How long will it take before the fabric is broken in and pliable? Just curious.

Unless you plan on washing it (I do not recommend it) it'll take a little while. I "kneaded" mine a bit before I used it. Kind of reminded me of working in an old baseball mit.

Remember how you tied up your mit to help it take its shape? Stuff a few towels in the bag to help with the shape.

Hey Crash, I was wondering why you don't recommend washing the pack? Also, would it be bad to just put it in the dryer for a little bit? Thanks again!

I like the looks of that Proteus. How much stuff can you actually fit into that?

While that bag is not advertised as water proof or resistant, IMO by putting it in the washer any water repellancy qualities that it does have will be weakened. Probably won't hurt it, I just prefer not to do it. I also give mine a light spray of Scotch Guard.

It's a pretty good sized. With the main compartment, smaller front compartment and two side compartments you can squeeze in quite a bit.

Hmmm, I think I'll give it a try. Might loosen up the fibers a bit. I worked on kneading it like a ball mitt, but it's pretty slow goin'.

You got me a bit curious, so I pulled this off the Maxpedition web site.
MAXPEDITION's nylon fabric is treated with Dupont Teflon for superb water and grime resistance. To clean, simply wipe down with a damp cloth. Allow gear to dry naturally. Do not machine wash. Do not use detergent or bleach.
Doesn't sound like they want you to put it in the dryer - at least not when wet.

I think the problem (I don't see it as a problem) of the condition is what makes it tough. Just use it - it'll work.
