    Default Stuck on a trail-

This story is not much other then an overnight trip,
    http://headlines.ocregister.com/news...iff_stuck.html

But what if that one night turned into numerous nights.
I am a 4wheeler, not anything hardcore but I do like driving dirt roads exploring. So this is a situation I might encounter.

I carry water, food and my truck would be my shelter. I also have space blankets x3 (one for each person) a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flashlights, axe, knives, fishing gear, tools, tow straps and other 4x4 items.

One thing I should carry is a gun, not sure about what type. Anything else I might need if I was stuck on the trail for days?

Do you have a winch? Snatch blocks? Fire making materials? Water purification materials?

Default You don't sound as if you are ready to carry a gun.

IMHO if you have to ask what kind of gun you should carry, it means you have little or no experience with weapons. I suggest you take a course to learn how to handle firearms safely, then decide what is best for you.

No winch, so no snatch blocks. I do have a high lift jack that can be used as a winch.

Yes I always have water proof matches, but I need to add water purification tablets.

The gun question was more of a shotgun / rifle vs. hand gun. The handgun would be easier to carry, but not as effective in defending against a wild intruder.

The biggest thing you have to worry about in Cali are black bears.
I'd go with a .44 mag, but you could make do just fine with a .357 mag.

Not just black bears, I fear the mountain lions as well. There are more mountain lion attacks then anything else around here.
