    Cool Small pack

Hello everyone. I'm looking for any ideas on a small, non-expensive pack that I can use for the essentials (knife, firesteel, small first aid kit, etc) in lieu of/addition to my larger pack that has my tent, sleeping bag, extra clothing, etc. Something with multiple compartments and a decent amount of room for its size. Any ideas? Thanks everyone!!

Here's a great lumbar pack! It holds a ton and keeps it all organized. Don't let the fact that it's called a photo pack mislead you. You can use it for almost anything. The design is exceptional and the material can take a beating and still look like new. I bought one, and I'm glad I did.

Maxpedition has a pretty large line of stuff. I own several. The waist packs come in various sizes, but look around the site, you may find something you like. http://www.maxpedition.com/

Thanks! I've looked at a few of the Maxpeditions. They look pretty versatile and tough. Have you used/tried the Proteus or the Thermite?

I have the Proteus and like it. I've also got the Fatboy and Jumbo Versa. Additionally I have about six of the waist packs in varying sizes. They pretty versatile. You can wear them on your belt or attatch very easily to your pack with a couple of Molle clips.

Crash, in another thread, I posted about my Maxpedition Falcon II. Great pack, but it just doesn't hold enough for me. I wish it were twice the size. However, it may be just what Rockgod1619 is looking for.

I suggested the lumbar because, with the right adjustments, he can use it with a backpack. I have.

Yeah, I liked the lumbar one, but it's just slightly out of my price range, which is why I'm looking mostly at the Proteus. It looks like I can add small outer pockets to it later, and attach it with MOLLE clips to a larger pack after I get one. Right now I've got a relatively cheap 75L pack that I use for 2- or 3-day trips. It's just too bulky for a day hike, which is for what I'm looking to use the smaller pack.

The Mountainsmith was on SteepandCheap.com for around $35.00 a week or so ago. Keep looking and you will find a great deal on them. Check out SteepandCheap.com - mostly clothes, but also some other great stuff - tents, sleeping bags, knives, etc., at up to 70% off. One deal at a time and only for 30 minutes at most - you can place a Desktop Alert on your computer to catch every deal while your online.

That is an awesome idea Ken, thanks!! I appreciate it! I just installed the Firefox addon.

Crash - you wouldn't happen to have any pictures of just how much the Proteus, Fatboy, and Jumbo will hold, would you?

Check your wife's (or mother's) pocketbooks! Take off the strap, and replace with clips. Laugh but it's a good source of leather, in all different sizes, with lots of compartments!

I'll snap a pic when I get a chance. I've already got one for the Fatboy on here in one of Hopeak's threads (type fatboy into the search and you should be able to find it)

Hmm, the only of Hopeak's threads that has "Fatboy" in it, doesn't have any pics from you, Crash. However I was able to find a few pictures on Google. Man, those things can hold a lot!!! Thanks though Crash, I appreciate it! Feel free to post pictures from the Proteus and Jumbo if you want though, haha!

Don't forget about you local army/navy surplus store. You can often find good gear for cheap there.

I have absolutely no idea where my local surplus store is, and I think it's about time I checked. Thanks for the tip Rick! I'll probably look there before I go ahead and get one online. I'm thinking about the Jumbo, just need an idea of how much it'll hold.

Even places like Cabellas or Gander Mountain can let you examine the item in person and, if you find that's what you want, can save you shipping charges.

Some of the surplus stores are pretty good about quality and price but like anything else you have to shop around. Some of them are rather pricey.

As with anything, buyer beware. I've picked up some things at a good price at gun shows and flea markets that looks just about identical to a popular name brand item. Oft times I was sadly dissappointed by the quality, which in the end resulted in spending more than I would have if I bought the proven item. But still.....ya gotta love a bargain.

Yeah, I'm going to go to Academy Sports+Outdoors today to get a few items, going to look at packs while I'm there. Maybe they'll have just the thing I'm looking for. If not, oh well, I'll keep looking. :-D

A easy way to find any store is this: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl just type military surplus in YOUR TOWN NAME HERE
I'd rather be carried by six than married by one!
