No Survival Rifle
I have given it a lot of thought, and I have decided not to get a Henry Survival Rifle. I have decided instead to buy 1000rds. of .22 Magnum Shells for my .22 Magnum.
I got to thinking that for the price of the rifle, I could buy the shells plus I would have the extra power of the magnum. My rifle is also a Henry Golden Boy .22.Mag., and you can drive a tack with it. I can't count the squirrels that I have got with it, plus a few rabbits. It is the smoothest lever action that I have ever fired.
Take only what you need, and leave the rest.
What will you have to pay for two bricks of mags. in America.......? They run about $120.00 here. You may be able to have Wall Mart order them. I have about 3,000 rounds of .22 mag. ammo. I wish it was all the same stuff, but it is not. I have decided to scope my S&W model-17 that I reamed out to .22 Mag. Also I am going to pick up another Remington 597 in .22 Mag. this combination will be my survival firearm set.

That is probably a wise choice, you can never have enough ammo
I have wanted the Henry or any of the other variants of that weapon for years. But I never wanted it enough to pay for it. The .22 mag is a fine round I have shot a Marlin bolt action .22 mag for over 20 years. It has more than enough power to take feral hogs, deer, etc. if the shot placement is correct. Although I don't recommend shooting feral hogs unless you are certain of the shot and have a climbable tree close, but that is another story!!
Aim for the eyes with the smaller calibers,and yes trees help from charging hogs.Im usually already in one when I shoot,but if they dont drop you gotta go in after em.Some of the noises they make wounded up is nerve racking.
Very wise decision IMHO. Buying ammo is the toughest part right now and it’s going to get worse. Buy another 1000 rounds if ya can. Stored correctly they last for ever.

Interesting you posted this... I just made the decision to not buy another gun and stick that money into ammo and other reloading components. I even took out a free ad in our paper stating I was looking for reloading supplies and tools in hopes I'll find some deals.
They want (and I kid you not) $23.50 a box of 20 for American Eagle .308FMJ here in Homer. I remember not that long ago paying $7.00 a box for same. .22LR is $20.00 to $23.00 a brick of 500 here as well.
Ammo is a prudent investment.

Because it packs away well and packs a helluva punch too. I can kill everything on Earth with a bow and arrows or traps. I need a rifle only personal protection.

I buy most of my center fire ammunition from these guys http://georgia-arms.com/ as they attend every gun show in town. Last show I bought 1000 rounds of .40. In the 15 minutes I was at the table I'm guessing they took in well in excess of $20,000.
The Sportsman whorehouse in Anchorage has been out of reloading components for six weeks. The story is that they got in a 40' van of reloading components, and one guy bought all of it. This sounds very hard to believe to me.
I've heard similar stories. A friend of mine was in Wally World when they were putting out a shipment of .223 ammunition. He had "heard" is was hard to find, so the genius bought it all (close to $2,000). We were at one of the gun shows together and at the Georgia arms booth. Their price has gone up quite a bit, but when I asked (in front of my friend) if they had any .223 he said yep - we brought about 100,000 rounds. If you need more than that, here's our card. My friend would have saved a whole lot of money.
I've noticed the ammo shortage is limited to military and common handgun calibers. I'm having no problem finding .270 Win here in Denver. There's also plenty of bullets available for reloading. It's very strange to see .223 FMJ selling for more than .270 SP rounds.

The ammo problem is just going to get worse. In states like this (the peoples repubic of Kaliforication) 2 bills have just been added, one will limit the amount of ammo you can purchase at any one time to 50 rounds. The second I'm still reading up on but it's not good either. It got my hackles up so I went and did an inventory of my ammo and made a list of reloading gear and ammo I need to stock up on.
They couldn't our guns so they will try to have us shooting blanks!

Ain't it the truth! last year i bought 1000 rounds of .223 fmj paid 149.00 bought a case (same brand) .last week $ 495.00 ( ordered the dies to reload yesterday)
If you're buying common caliber from Georgia Arms, call first. Spoke to their rep at a recent gun show, they were already out of everything I needed (did have subsonic 9mm) and I asked if the website was a good way to go. He flat told me not to try it but to call. Orders via the web are usually refused when ammo gets tight, but over the phone they will check and ship if available...
