You will know a person by their actions. Names are just shorthand for a description.
I wouldn't be difficult to find. Heck, I'm here to learn about some things I don't know, to try out some things I do know, to think in some directions that I don't normally think in my day job.
What's in a name? Simply a summary of actions.

    Question What's in a name?!

Let me preface by saying. . . .

First; My responses to questions asked are as honest and real as they can be. I give them from my many years of experience in the bush. I try to be as forthcoming with my responses so that others that are asking may be able to glean some good info or pointers from my answers.

I have no reason to be "fake" on here. If I thought that I needed to be fake or just give some half-assed, unfounded answer, then I would not even waste my time signing in to this forum. And I think, if I'm not mistaken, that is the feeling of many of the people that post here.

Second; I come here to glean new and better ideas I can add to my repertoire for my students and clientele, and I have learned a lot from fellow forum members (Thank you all!)

    Now. . .

Rick wrote: How does anyone know my REAL name is Rick? A name is just a name. The person behind the name is still the same regardless of what you call him.
I agree with Rick. It doesn't matter what "screen name" a person uses, it matters about how the person acts on the forum that counts. They can be as big of a jerk whether they use their real name or a fictitious screen name and vice-versa. And, really, unless you meet a person face-to-face, you really don't know anything about them. Nativedude is a name given to me many, many (about 20) years ago by a group of high school students that I was teaching native (Indian) primitive living skills. I had them make gourd bowls and water containers, taught them how to make cordage from willow bark and cattail stalks, how to make fire with a bow drill, etc. and at the end of the day they said "wow you really are like a Native dude!" And it has stuck with me ever since.

Jason Montana wrote:I disagree. Its easy to be fake online, and never have to be accountable for what you say. Its almost harder to be real online
Jason, it is easy to be fake online no matter what. Using a screen name doesn't make the person anymore fake than if they use their real name (if even is their real name).

I have been living and exploring in the wilds for 36 years. I've been there, done that. I have been teaching primitive living and wilderness survival for 29 years. I can spot a fake or at least a person who is an arm-chair survival wannabe just by the answers they post on the various threads in this forum.

That to me is a better way of spotting the "fakers" than by their screen name, be it real or made up!

Just a reminder to all....I said i like this forum because of how "real" most everyone is...I guess I should have phrased my question differently and said, "Since everyone here is so real, why don't we just all use our real names?"

Its other forums that bug me with lots of anonomous slammers, and people with lots of different screen names. This place is cool because people will slam you, and still tell you who they are

    Jason,

I, for one, am not chastising you for your post. Just trying to give you some insight from my POV on your question.

Sometimes our "real" names are not dear to us.... like I said before what's in a name.
When I was born the government had a "name" already for me on my birth certificate, a series of letters and numbers (so much easier to keep track of us)
Then my parents gave me my first birth name, as I matured it changed or was added to.

Would knowing my registration number make me "real"?

Creator knew my name when I was conceived, that's all I need.

My name is Tom. I chose woodlander cause that is exactly what I am. 1314 is the year when one of my ancestors was deemed standard bearer for King Robert the Bruce during the Scottish Wars of Independence. I used to be Ghillieman1314 on other forums but my parents made me get rid of it due to some... complicated things behind that...

Seriously? Are you kidding me? When was the last time you were shot in the back of the head or walked into a gas chamber? Pick any number you want, social security, driver's license, birth certificate, telephone, vehicle registration, CCW, fishing, hunting, etc. None of them remotely approach that tattoo, what it stood for or what it resulted in. Poor analogy, brother.

from personal experience i find it hard to discuss my real intentions for a bugout including supply lists, stock piles, and armament then post my real name and how to find me. to me it seems like an invitation to get robbed. if my family is forced to survive on what little i can put aside, i'm not sharing. true if anyone really wants to find me they will. i'm just not going to make it easier.

Now with all this talk of illegal drug use, i can see why some people like to keep a low profile.

Jay is part of my name (abriviation....sp). The reason I dont advertise all my personal details is due to the nature of some work I do, I could become a target. that is why I dont have my name or pics of myself posted on any site. It happend to me once a long time ago....and i still have the scars. Besides I now have a family. So I'll remain Jay. take it or leave it.

    Default Whats in a nickname?

I tried this at another Forum with fairly good results so wanted to post this question here as well.
Looking around the threads I have noticed some very unique and interesting nicknames used by the members here. Some of them are pretty self explanatory for example..."Ken" pretty original huh?...
Some of them however must have a pretty interesting story behind how they were originated and that is what this is all about.
For example my own nickname rat31465 was derived from my days as a child when one of my favorite games to play was Pirates.
314 is the numeric equivalent to Pi. (Yeah I know it is actually 3.14...give me a break here.) 65 being the year I was born...and the "rat" is just that.
Well Yahoo wouldn't allow me to use numeric characters before alpha so I ended up being rat Pi 65 instead.

    So lets here yours.

Crash only joined the Navy so he could SAY that's why he uses his screen name. In fact, I've heard from reliable sources that his actual birthname IS Crashdive. The 1-2-3 part refers to how high they could count before the sub bottomed out........
