Tipi's - what do you reckon?

I've always been fascinated by Tipi's and someone on another site (aussurvivalist.com) gave a link to some other sites that had links? :tongue_smilie:
Anyhow I've hopefully got them all together here (all 2 of them LOL) and I reckon that this would be the best place for feedback about them as I think there are some Native Americans here amongst us.:)
I hope they are of interest to you. Of course they may be commonplace where you come from but they are extremely rare here in Australia.:innocent:
Could you please have a look at these modern versions and give us an idea of what you think would work well and what you think would be a bad idea in comparison with either a traditional Tipi or indeed a modern 'normal' tent?

I really like the Kiraru ones, except they are so dang expensive. I've been toying with making my own out of silnylon, souldn't be to difficult(I hope,but then I have a bit of sewing experience too). Heres a link to a guy who did the same, his is quite nice!

The original ones look very heavy and solid.

I'm interested to find out if anyone who normally uses a traditional one has ever used one of these 'new' kinds.

Does it 'feel' the same (not the material- the ambiance)

Are they warm? I like the idea of that wee stove. How practical is it. Surely if you heat the tent up to 80 degrees the flue would be pretty hot - doesn't that mean it will burn/melt any material that's near it?

I like the Reece ones and one other also, can't find that link. I know, they're NOT packable, and some are astronomically expensive. I'm thinking about making one myself, but probably without the "liner" on the inside. Anyway, the link to quite a few manufacturers:

Their stuff looks great but a bit pricey to import to Australia and a wee bit permanent looking.
Mind you it would be nice to have a permanent chill out space.

Yup. I like the tipi idea but having poles makes it a pita. Using a similar cover and just suspending the top/point from a tree branch might be ok, but then I'd be wondering about the fire possibly being too hot for the tree.
Dumb question for any of our indian people here. Did the original tipi's have that inner liner part or is that a new addition?

if you like tipis, i recommend building your own.

the two problems i have with them are 1.) portability and 2.) cost.

a decent readymade tipi can cost a couple of hundred dollars and they are not practical for transportation unless you are using pack animals or a full size motor vehicle.

from this perspective, a collapsible/sectional pole tent is more convenient in many scenarios.

what i do like about tipis and yurts is the stability. it's certainly nice to be able to suspend hammocks, benches, shelves, etc from the walls.

i'm making a tipi at my place primarily because of that stability [we get high winds regularly here] and because i hav they weather well and they are light.

i still wouldn't want to carry 15lb+ of canvas, pluss these boles while trekking.

tipis can be heated, and can be well insulated, but they are also sizable spaces to heat.

with this in mind, which pros and which cons apply to your situation?

Well I don't really have 'a situation' as such Canid - just curious.
I've got a family / 2 room tent that is a twin dome and man is it heavy and a pain to erect. I don't mind the feel of living inside a tent (lived in a 2 man tent for over a year when I was younger) and came across those 2 Tipi sites (in the OP) and was just curious about whether many here use Tipis as opposed to modern tents and if so why they do.
Just trying to learn a bit more you know. :)

My first response would be...there are an awful lot of native Americans/Indians/Aboriginals or whatever the word for the day is who won't know jacksh*t about tipis, although this forum is probably a good place to find some who do know something about them. There are a lot of natives to whom the tipi is no more traditional than it is to a Finn or a Siberian or a Hindu, it wasn't their traditional dwelling space.

On the "inner lining" question, it's doubtful that the original tipis had them because the original ones were made out of bison hide

Tipis, by design, are very good at withstanding strong winds and very easy to keep warm.

There are chimney rings that one can buy that protect canvas tents from catching on fire from the heat of the stove pipe. I imagine one could use the same thing in the smoke hole of a chimney, but remember too that also by design, if a tipi is built properly, one can safely keep a fire going in the center of the tipi and the smoke will rise up through the smoke hole. People coming in and out mess up the system because the outside air changes the air circulation, so learn to get in and out fast!

I'm sure it would be possible for someone to show that not all tipis had a liner, but they were a fairly common and important part of these lodges, especially in "original" form. It is, in fact, the liner (or technically the space between the liner and the outer tipi wall) that creates the draft of air that pulls out the smoke from the center firepit.

Modern "tipis" like the kifaru don't use/need a liner because the stoves used in them have a chimney pipe. All such tents (whether tipi-style or wall tents) have the stove pipe openings (and often a large area around this area) reinforced with fire retardant material.

Regular, full-size tipis are great if you are going to leave them up in the same space for relatively long periods of time. Even Native American nomadic tribes didn't exactly move constantly from place to place. They moved to a location and then stayed there for months on end.

the art of keeping the smoke rising up in a tipi is much in the lay and tending of the fire as well.

a good friend lived in one through a east coast winter and was a lot warmer than us living in a old farm house.t
he liner is a must have for proper ventilation of the smoke.another good idea is to bury a stove pipe running from outside the tent to the fire,if you put a flapper valve(damper) in the pipe you can turn the fire up and down.
they aren't hard to make if you have a sewing machine that will sew canvas.
proper ventilation and draw of the fire is controlled by the flaps at the top of the teepee.another nice thing is that they are huge inside and there is no wasted space.
