Hiking Boots
Wow. I haven't been here in a while. I've been busy with both occupation and recreation. Hope everybody had some good holidays!
Now, I've been looking for some new, good hiking boots, and I set my sights on some but read some bad reviews. I know there are some hikers on here so I had to pop the question. What do you guys like?

Good to see you back around AR. With hiking boots, you're just going to have to find what is comfortable for you and appropriate for the kind of hiking and weather you'll be in. What are you looking at?

I went with a pair of Hi-techs, haven't hiked in them yet but they had good reviews and the guy at sport authority recommended them. If his opinion really holds any wait.

I've had my eye on some Danner Talus GTX's.
I use Danner everyday for work, albeit a different kind, and I've never had any problems with them in five years. However, those hikers seemed kind of heavy for a mid-weight boot, and I read a review of a guy's sole falling off which I found truoblesome.
Mostly, they're just for knocking around trails here in Arkansas, maybe some kayaking, and my new hobby - Geocaching ( :D ).
Any thoughts?

Several years ago I found a pair of Timberland hiking boots that were very comfortable. I use them every day for work, hiking trails, etc. When they wore out I went to buy another pair - they were on sale (bough 4 pair).

My advice
Hi there. Just joined. My wife and I are avid backpackers and wilderness enthusiasts. We hike extensively through the northern Rockies through BC and Yukon here in Canada (have done some pretty intense hikes!).
Anyway, I bought a new pair of boots last year, and you should definitely give these a look. They're manufactured by Vasquez (model GTX XCR or similar, can't find the box that indicates) and tey have hands down been the best boots I've ever had. They are warm and always completely dry, made with GoreTex and a Vibram sole. Excellent ankle support, many times I hiked through tall wet grass and moving streams these boots never leaked a drop! Combine with some good wool socks (I love X-Statics, smell free too!, though the Vasquez' have their own silver lining), and my feet were good for hikes in sweltering 35C heat down to freezing -20C snow hiking.
Just thought I'd pass along, I've found them to be such excellent boots, my wife gave up her pair of Merrill's for some, and she thinks they're much better too. Hope this helps,

Rocninwhthmatt - Good suggestion. When you get a chance, hike on over to the Introduction section and tell us a bit about yourself. Thanks.

get some combat boots, work for me!!!!

I have 2 pair of hiking boots: Hi-tecs and Timberlands. They have both held up very well.
Hi-tecs particularly I think are a good value for the price.
-
Concur on the Hi Tecs, worn them for years.Just good all round boot, great price
-
I tried on about 20 different pairs in an outdoor store before settling on some Merrell's recently. They are extremely comfortable over rough terrain on long treks (and sturdy, waterproof, and have good laces for an emergency bow/drill situation or whatever).

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into some of the models you mention. :)

Check out Lowas
I have a couple pairs of Lowa boots -- hiking, backpacking and cold weather -- and have had great luck with them. They aren't cheap, but the quality and comfort has been remarkable.
And, of course, as others have said, find what fits you best.

Lowas are good from what I hear. I myself use a pair of proven Scarpa SL M3's. Guyinsd, when you get a chance, hike on over to the Introduction section and tell us a bit about yourself.
haha, my first Crash introduction redirect

Well done Mitch. Well done.

Danner Mtn light 2. All leather with Norwegian welt sole- completly rebuildable, will last for over a decade.
Vasque sundowner also another great choice.
Vasque Montana classic heavy duty off-trail, heavy pack hiker.
I love all 3 of these boots
