Hey there sam gribbly. If there was enough of the aircraft left I would try to center my shelter building efforts around that. (heard that from an ole Alaska bush pilot). How about flying on over to the introduction section and tell us about yourself. Thanks.
i would see what i could salvage from the plane but cloth only the metal would conduct too much cold, this scenario has variations to it such as what time of year type of plane, but i would probably focus on a debris hut unless in the mountains or snow the would use debirs of plane to build a snow shelter and would build my fire on a piece of the wreckage.
I like crashes Idea about basing the shelter around the plane, I'd probably do that too. Well If I was waiting for a rescue I'd make a shelter by the plane because it'd last and give you lot's of shelter, but if you had to find a way to civilization, then I'd take some supplies from the plane and use them for shelter wherever I went. A tarp would be a great start.....if your plane had a tarp in it.
Lots of parts available from the aircraft. Wiring, cushions, seat covers, fuel, the list goes on and on.
Ahem. I would pull my survival kit out of the wreckage. Whip out my sleeping bag and tent and call it home until the EPIRB brought in the rescuers (assuming I can't hike out).
Did all of you forget your survival gear on this trip?:D

Since I'm not some super wilderness guru who would just start walking, in this scenario I would do as others mentioned, stay with the aircraft and build a shelter with or around it.
My first priority after shelter and a warm fire would be to locate the radio and the battery, I can make an antenna and radio for help.
How about an inflatable mattress made out of the inflatable raft and a tent made out of the parachute?
Maybe you could salvage the seat and make a bed with that, Its still fairly warm there right now so I wouldnt focus much on warmth from cabin insulation, etc.
If there was a parachute, I wouldn't have crashed with the plane.:D

Sure are, However since they are kept inside the plane (Which from the crash is quite possibly on fire and teeaming with smoke and fumes) i dont think there would be much left to carry.Quote:

So what kind of airplane were we crashing in: Airliner, Bush plane, what?
I crashed in a UH-1N in the 80's and I didnt know we had crashed until I realized I wasnt flying any more but laying on my back looking up at the sky and the leaves falling out of the trees. It was very peacefull until I took a breath and felt all the places I had pain and heard the cries and moans from the others on the chopper.
I'd probably not build any shelter, I'd just give up and die
Well when I was in the chopper crash. After I got over the shock of it. I dug out the 5500a and radioed for help. Then myself and those that were not seriously hurt started treating those that were. It was kinda cool. We had 2 army doctors, 1 dentist, 2 med techs and 2 security plus the 3 man flight crew. Pilot, co-pilot and door gunner. Our rescue was one of the other choppers in the flight a CH-47 that was able to land about 300m away. We were airborne within 1hr and back at base within 1hr after that. So no need to build a shelter.
