You are looking at the 5.56 version I take it since you mentioned AR mags. For that price, why have a bolt action when you can get an entry level AR for that $$$$$? I don't see too much of a use for 5.56 in a bolt action, but if I were to get one I would be looking for one in the under $350 range for the amount of use I'd give it. A cheaper Savage or Remington and possibly look at the used market for further savings.
For a bolt gun, I would go with the 7.62 and the model I would choose would be the Remington 700. A few hundred dollars cheaper, proven over decades of use, and the most favored bolt gun of LEO and US Military in recent years. My second choice would be a Winchester Model 70.
JMHO. If you want one though, go for it.

The MVP.
I have handled a couple at the LGS and helped two or three folks sight theirs in at the local range this fall. I have no long term experience with that specific model. They have not impressed the socks off me, but I have no obvious negatives to state other than their high price point for what they are, an entry level rifle with a big magazine.
The basic advantage I find in .223 bolt guns is that there is a massive amount of pickup brass available at almost any range, and being a reloader that appeals to me, and justifies the purchase of a bolt action ,223. But it does not take much to justify the purchase of a new rifle in my world.
I am now shooting a good deal of cast bullet .223 in the place of the near extinct .22lr round. (We are talking $0.04 cents each per round, which is cheaper than bulk .22 at the "old prices".) .223 jacketed bullets are the cheapest on the market, which makes the round a reloader's delight.
I would like to have one of these small-bore creations but I am debating the need for the AR mag. I have other Hi-cap semi-auto performers and, like Nate, see no need for a high capacity bolt action rifle.
The MVP is a basic entry level rifle with the ability to use the AR magazine. (can we say a reincarnation of the Enfield jungle carbine) Savage, Marlin and Ruger all offer entry level rifles in .223 that will preform equally well but lack the AR magazine function. They do that at a price point $200 less than the MVP.
I feel that the MVP is a nice marketing move specifically aimed at people in the States that have banned "assault rifles". But they have overpriced their offering thinking the "tacti-cool" market will pay what they have too to use an AR magazine.
If the AR mag function is critical to your needs and you have an extra $200 and/or just want that rifle then go for it.
OK, I was considering an MVP as my next purchase and now I have sat here and talked myself out of buying one.
Large cap magazines on a bolt gun is not a requirement of mine.
.223 is a good varmint load, where precision is normally desired over "spraying & praying".
Have a friend that has built several AR based deer rifles, different calibers and has gone to 5 rd. mags, as the high cap mags....hang up in the brush.

I agree with you rebel. I like having iron sights as well, especially when optics go south at bad time. I have installed a couple of sights myself. It can be done.
Yea. Except for the mosin and 45/70, I haven't shopped for a rifle in about 20 years. I cleaned out the safe and was looking for a little somethin'. I'm set up for the 223 with brass, primer, powder and lead. You can carry more 223 than 308 (less powder and lead too when reloading). I know that with the right bullet, it will take deer at 300 yards+/-. I've got the mags. Not 5, 10 or 20 rounders but, it's workable. I like the bolt action in that it's reliable and a brass saver. With a good foldable stock this MVP would make a decent pack rifle IMO. The ammo is easy to find and the mags are easy to find. In my area, the range could be 30 yards to whatever across a field. I'm not concerned with the long range shots. Having a 300 yard effective range would be fine. A guy could take some small rifle primers, powder, bullet mold, lee reloader and do alright. The guy with the out of balanced tires wouldn't be lovin life.
..223 a little fast in normal loads for lead bullets....maybe get with Kyrat on what he uses.......?

So, what about those that propose using a 22lr? I knew a different guy who did that. It took like 16-17 rounds!
We are having a lot of deer shot in my area with the .223, especially during the youth hunt. Any of the good soft points from 55 grains up seem to do the job but I suspect that the kids are doing a better job of shot placement, under supervision, than most adults.
As a survival rifle ?? You shoot what you see with what you have in your hands. If I had my 'druthers I'd 'druther have a bigger bore when that happens. Something to consider when we make our choices of what might be in our hands when that time comes.
Seems like every time I have to consider that possibility I wind up with a shotgun in my hands instead of a rifle.
I feel fortunate to be in a situation where I have more than one or two choices. As I said, I am looking at the .223 as a replacement for .22lr and not as an all purpose rifle.
My cast bullet load is a 55gn gas check bullet on top of 5 grains of Unique and a small pistol primer. I am dumping the powder charge from a measure so it is not a precision load. I do not know the fps but I speculate about 1800fps. It is shooting inside an inch at 50 yards out of my Rossi SS, which is not exactly a target rifle. The same rifle will shoot factory fmj into about 3" @100.
My perspective on iron sights is jaded too. Back about 30 years ago my eyes went just bad enough that I could not use iron sights at all. I had to scope everything, so I quit even considering the presence of iron sights. They were simply useless appendages. Surgery about 5 years ago corrected the problem, so I can shoot irons again, but I have become used to the precision of optical devices.

Depends on the price. The thing I have discovered about surplus rifle is the bore can be crap and they will still hit within a 10" circle at 200 yards using iron sights and surplus ammo. The K98 was originally chambered in 8mm Mauser, but some post war conversions can be found in 7.62 NATO (.308 Win) and .303 British. Any of those rounds are more than sufficient at dropping anything you want to shoot at. Just put 5 rounds at 3/4 inch at 100 yards from a Mosin. Got more in up grades than the rifle is worth. However, I had fun doing it. Can't shoot without folks showing up. A couple high schoolers are coming over tomorrow. Even the girls like a 50cal.

My son in law is a big boy. He's 6' 3" and shot the Mosin for the first time this summer. He has a new found respect for Russian women snipers.
I have used the .223 for whitetail many times in the past with great success. Specifically a remington 788. Come to think of it I have probably killed more deer with a .223 than any other caliber. I have a plethora of calibers to choose from if need be.
Taking a look at the CZ 527, Savage hog hunter and a 6.5 Grendel. Decisions, descisions. Anything in 6.5 is nice. Ruger has a 6.5 creedmoor in their cheap line-up.
223? WAAAY better of just getting a S&W M&P Sport...
