Regarding the banning of certain members.

I see there is at least one member crying about Crashdive banning them and doing it in the public forums.

1st, asking "why" publicly is a waste of time. We're not going to give the reason publicly. It's like when you get fired from a job, that's not something that management talks about in public.

2nd, There is an "appeal" process, you can send an e-mail to Chris and he'll look into it to see if you have a valid complaint.

3rd, as a mod I trust the decisions of my fellow mods to be the correct one.

4th, you are NOT in a public place, this is a privately owned forum, so if you don't follow the rules, and/or argue with ANY mod that's a valid reason for banning!

For the record, Crash is NOT a ruthless mod that goes around banning members without a good reason. My only complaint is that he probably beat me to it!...:taz:

Nicely put. I know of some other places where the mods et al abuse the power righteously. I havent seen nor do foresee that being a problem here.

I sort of wish this thread hadn't been started, as it just adds fuel to the fire. Since it was started, I'll explain - somewhat.

Most of you probably didn't see the profanity laced posts that were made because some called BS on a particular method of fire starting. Of course, the young man failed to note that some that did - said shoot a vid a prove us wrong and we'll apologize. Anyway - back to the profanity. Directing that tirade toward other members is not something that will stand. There were probably half a dozen posts that were deleted. The matter was then being handled via PM. It did not go well.

As has been stated - disciplinary action is not open for discussion on the open forum. When other moderators are on line, we will often discuss things before taking action. In this case, one is on vacation and one isn't on-line that much. Trust me - this ain't rocket science.

OMG this is still a topic of discussion. wasn't this done awhile ago?

What's the fuss? A person breaks the rules, you face the consequences. Simples!

I guess some folks have a mindset that forums are like the wide open spaces where you can do anything you want until someone knocks your block off, except there's no remedy on the Internet because you can't really knock anyone's block off.

I've mentioned that I've been banned from several forums and I'm perfectly happy to discuss those bannings, but one thing I've maintained through my entire Internet life. Unless forums are specifically designed to be public, they're not. There's almost always an individual or group who owns the site and they have ideas about how they want the site to be. In my opinion, they have the right to ban anyone they want for any reason they want. It's their house, they invite guests in and, if they're good hosts they will not allow individuals to make life miserable for other people in their house. I have never had a problem with forums banning me.

That said, I also have the right to discuss that banning in other forums. I believe that if the particular banned individual in question takes this course, within a very short period of time, the forum he elects to complain to will understand the exact nature of his banning and he will soon be banned again.

I rarely complain about specific boards on other boards but a couple of boards I have been kicked off of, I recon to be extremely toxic and I will warn other people off. For instance, one board I joined decided that members of a certain nature had to change that nature or be in danger of hell fire. It just so happened that I had worked with people who had tried to change that nature and spent months helping them get over the resulting disasters. So I posted a sizable argument that the forum's position was untenable and, predictably, I was banned. The email from the forum stated that, many of the forum members took my post to heart and left the board. I went on some other forums and warned people off the forum that had banned me and one of the mods came over and denied that some of the things had happened, which was a dumb thing to do since I had the email and the original post was still up. Then I got to confront a Christian forum for lying.

This forum is a very beneficial site and I have never seen anything that smacks of impropriety from the mods (well, some of the hong photographs are a little trauma-inducing, but beyond that....). There's all kinds in the world. Some are just looking for reasons to cause problems; some are just sick minds that want attention so badly that they'll monkeywrench healthy relationships to get it. I feel badly for the sick minds but forums like this are not the place for therapy (I seriously doubt if any place on the Internet is appropriate for that). This forum has the beneficial purpose of education. If the mods are not defending that purpose, they're simply not doing their job.

Not only is this board not a democracy/anarchy - it should not be a democracy/anarchy. It was formed for reasons and for this board to be available to others for the reasons it was formed (beneficial reasons) it needs to be preserved as is. Democracy/anarchy would allow outside groups to come in and subvert those purposes. Stores, schools, churches, offices, etc. are not democracies or anarchies, should not be democracies/anarchies, and this forum is no different. Some folks who believe in the right of the individual to the exclusion to the right of other individuals in the neighborhood can't wrap their brains around the idea of moderator's rights to preserve the founding principles of a forum.

This board is the way it should be. If I threaten that, I should be banned. If I don't like this board so much that I would want to threaten it's integrity or the peace on the board, I should be banned. There are other forums that will serve my purposes better. I should be there.

I think...being an outsider (not from the USA), who have led a few forums and the lead for a foreign bike group (and yes we do have forums too), I would like to state here that I leave the decisions to the mods and admins.
Yes, I agree that this is a private forum.
Yes, I agree that some sort of rule or discipline need to be instilled to make sure we are keeping ourselves on the right track.

It is imperative that we instill some sort of discipline as this is a survival forum, where, if and when we impart the wrong knowledge, it might cause some problems to people who believe or trusted that information.

The person responsible for the information, needs to ensure that proof is given when requested.

I will not comment on the nature of the arguments or lack of respect or the languages used, just wanna make it short by saying, I trust the mods and admins here.

Not a debate about methods and survival info, but flaming, profanity, and refusing to listen to the mods when they are trying to re-establish order can be. Most often we start with a warning PM and even deleting objectionable content. If the problem persists we get stricter; if the person in question is just hard-headed and starts cussing out the mods while refusing the warning then it's a good chance that they will be banned. However, that's not the point here; the point being is that the mods don't air this sort of thing in public. Saying crap like Crash is exceeding his authority is not for a member to say on the forums. If you feel that he is send a PM to Chris and he'll look into it. However, just let me say that Crash is not an overbearing tyrant at all, he's a very compassionate person who likes to give the offending member every chance....:detective:

We also have to remember that we attract some real nut cases due to the fact that we have the word "survival" in our banner.

With the slowdown of the "survival movement" on the internet there are fewer and fewer forums for the hard core to visit, so they gravitate here, thinking they are going to land in "like minded" company. We have always had to deal with the borderline phsycos, and we have a special thread just for their more humorous antics.

They are not just trolls, some of them are crazy!

That means we are going to need the quick action of the moderators to maintain the quality of the site as well as order in the ranks.

In contrast to most other outdoor forums we have a large pool of contributors. Hardly a day goes by without a couple of new threads being posted, new people arriving, and good questions being presented.

The fact that we have as many contributing members as do and as much participation as we have is testimony to the quality of the work of the senior members and the mods.

Yup, if 2D2Q hasnt been banned by now, you really gotta mess up to get banned! ha ha!

And your right on the "survival" in the name... *we* know what the forum is about, and thats why BOB and BOL and the sorts are discussed at a minimum here... BUT... the die hard flakes will still only see SURVIVAL and some of them, are bass ackwards thinkers..

Im not a prepper, Im a survivalist.. from the old school.. but my interest here is simply to enrich my mind for my deep woods outings because I *love* being in the field! Hiking, backpacking and camping in the woods is as close as I can get to a true spiritual experience and Im addicted to it!


Other than that, I cant believe this thread wont die! HA HA! (Now Im guilty of carrying it on...)

Back to the topic, I think this is one of the forums that respects its members. Take me for example. Being some one from a far away place, not knowing your customs and your level of acceptance, still , sometimes when I joke or horse around, I feel that I am still accepted. This is a good forum, and the members here made me feel accepted well...There are other forums and they even have members who either pm me or state outright on the open forum, that they feel that I being someone from a different place, should not think that I am smart and they stated that they think I am trying to be a wise guy or a smart *** when I shared something that is not to their liking. Till this moment, I have yet to see any of the members here do such. I feel respected and accepted. Thank you guys and gals...for being such nice people and friends.

But, you see, being a wiseguy and all that, you're, like, among friends and family here.

My observation has been that it is a lack of sense of humor that gets many of the people that have been banned in trouble. To a great extent "wise guys" do fit in here better than at other sites.

This group pokes fun at each other and it is the kind of humor that requires a certain IQ threshold to understand. It takes a certain intelligence level to get along with the folks on this forum, an IQ level that is not required to function on most other survival boards.

Some people take our kidding as an insult and rather than come back with their own "poke in the eye" they get mad and go into a vicious rant that is devoid of the humor, start a bunch of inappropriate stuff and get themselves into trouble.

Many people in our group have also been parents or teachers and we have well developed BS filters. We call the BS and juvenile behavior and claims for what it is very quickly. When did this happen? What were the specifics? Show us the pictures? How have you done that for all these years without being arrested? All are common questions around here. And there is sometimes a sudden shock when a newbie challenges us with "do you think I am lying?" and our answer is "YES!". These people are not used to being challenged, so they go into their rant mode and get banned rather than being allowed to take over the forum as they had intended.

With fewer and fewer "survival forums" on the internet they gravitate here much quicker than they once did.

If you come here seeking quick praise you had better forget it! You have to stick around, put up with our questions, teasing and jokes, ask/answer enough questions to let the group know you are "normal" and get to know us and let us get to know you. During that time you will learn the etiquette of the site and how to function, question and politely tell someone they are full of crap without getting banned.

Fitting in around here is worth the effort. I have never been a member of another forum where I felt I "knew" some of the members on a personal level. There are many here that have shared a campfire, and others I would like to meet face to face because I have come to know them and would really like to shake their hand (minus the booger flippers) at least once.

But never forget, our mods will ban a long term member if they go off them deep end! I have been here for 5 years and almost every year a member with more than 4,000-5,000 posts will go completely bonkers and require forced exile.

Seems like that 4000 to 5000 is like 100K miles mark...some are all used up...some have made it that far, and will keep going for a while.

I remember when I thought 1,000 was a big deal. I worried that I was on the computer too much.

That was back before I retired.
