Question: Rendering a Live Round Inert

The girlfriend asked me to make her a keychain fob from a .458 Winchester Mag round. Obviously, it would have rendered inert before it ends up on a key ring.

First of all, here's NO WAY that I'm about to drill into the casing of a live .458, or any other round for that matter, as a few people have suggested. And then, there's the matter of removing the primer...

Any suggestions, people? I sold all of my reloading equipment over 20 years ago when ammo was dirt cheap. Has anyone tried this with a Lyman Magnum Inertia Bullet Puller, and will it remove the primer as well?

Bullet puller will work, either the press or hammer style....then dump the powder.
Some say WD 40 make the primer inert, I would just have some one pop it off if you can find some one that has the gun.

Have never tried pushing out a live primer.

Pull the bullet. Dump powder. Load it and fire the primer. Reinsert bullet.

The gun dealer that has the consignment of designer weapons should be able to solve the problem for you.

As for trying to push out the live primer, it might not fire but it also might. Don't try it.

We used to put red finger nail polish on our gator rounds to water proof them. It also seemed an effective way to render the primer inert. Used to just throw a couple of rounds in the boat with firing pin dents in the primer. It was the explanation for why the gator we were transporting was still alive. If it is still alive you can skin it when you get a round-2-it. LOL

Just a word of caution I know of a kid that got an 18 year sentence for possession of ammunition for an inert key chain bullet. Three time loser...

In MA you need one just to possess empty brass.
Though with Ken, I'm betting he has that part covered.

RR is right for a couple reasons - when I was very young, I took a .38 Special round and was able to pull the slug out. I then dumped the powder. I dealt with the primer by putting the case in a vise and striking the primer (OK OK it worked and as I said, I was very young).

Benefit to these similar techniques is being able to show a spent primer in the case to prove it isn't live.

You have to have a permit for brass? That's nuts. What are you going to do throw handfuls of brass at someone?

@Old GI - We got old in spite of our best efforts to the contrary. Didn't we? My guess is most of us were just one drink or one unlucky moment away from being a Darwin Award nominee at some point in our lives. Now, about the live round. Hand me that nail and a hammer.......

Ken, I really don't understand how people can subject themselves to BS like that. Another reason to not spend my vacation money in your area.

Except in the case of a powder-fired carpentry tool. I'm pretty sure you can buy those rounds off the shelf here without a license though I don't have one in my tool kit to know. We had to take a 10 minute safety class at work on using the Ramset but were never issued anything.

In this photo my son is sitting on a 7' alligator waiting on a friend to bring him a powder actuated tool to dispatch it. We had our .357 and .44 bangsticks as well as my P226. But, my buddy wanted to try the powder actuated tool.

Powder actuated tools by Hilti were used a lot in construction in the early 80's and then fell out of favor because people used the wrong shot and the concrete would fracture and later fail. So, the inspectors started saying no to shot.

In regards to the ramset charges, here's a link on using them in a firearm. I have no commercial connections to this company other than someone gave me one as a gift a few years back.

I had never seen that. It is cool. We used Hilti guns (I think it's the same as Ramset) back in the day. We had to be licensed to use them in Illinois. That thing could sure sink a fastener in concrete.

Generally when it says Hilti on the box....You are already in over your head.......
Mine is a Remington, works good, set a lot studs in the basement concrete with it.....all sorts of loads and lengths of fasteners

Actually have both the pistol looking one and the hammer version.
