Frankly, I think we do a lousy job at police actions. We go, we kill, we get killed and we leave. Then everything reverts back to the way it has been for centuries. One more reason I was opposed to invading Iraq.
This is an entirely different kind of warfare, unlike anything we've ever experienced, and yet we can't seem to adapt and get a hold of it.
Think of it as cancer metastasis where you are not dealing with a malignant lump or two you can just excise and be done with. This cancer has spread throughout the body and mutates all the time, becoming resistant to meds that have previously worked.
You've got to fight it on all fronts, throw everything at it at your disposal and only pull back when advanced diagnostics show there's No Evidence of Disease. But you can never ever let your guard down, you can never quit being vigilant.
I am not surprised by this. B 100% agree, unless you eradicate the infection completely, it comes back and is usually worst.
I guess I'll have to disagree. Throwing everything at it including my privacy is not what I need. I don't pretend to be well versed in military tactics but it sure seems to me that when you radicalize a person from the moment they are a small child all the way to adulthood throwing everything you have at it is not the way to Git-R-Done. It only proves to them what they've been told all their life. Surgically removing the head of the snake every time it sprouts would be much more effective, less expensive in terms of people and finance and a more humane way to accomplish it.
That does mean rounding up those folks that have overstayed their visa here at home. That does mean drone and cruise missile attacks where ever we find them training and living. That does mean using a smidgen of common sense now and then.
At first, no doubt. But as time passes, we've been doing the all out method for 30 years, fewer and fewer will be willing to assume the roll of snake head when they see all of them snuffed out. Eventually, you have no one to lead, no one to continue teaching radical Islam and no one to wanting to keeping looking over their shoulder for the next air strike.
You don't need a snake head any more once the metastasis has occurred. Surgery of the largest lumps alone, doesn't take care of hundreds of cancerous lesions throughout the body, each one being able to invade and damage healthy tissue around it. You need adjuvant therapy--radiation, chemo, cyber knife, lifestyle change, immunity boosters, nutrition, faith, etc., as well as advanced diagnostics to be able to anticipate the MO of the disease and fight it on all fronts.
In other words, once you eliminate the big guys, your job isn't done. Gotta use intelligence, diplomacy, policy change (stay the heck out of where you don't belong), support of allies and local enforcement of immigration laws, among other things. And by throwing everything we got against this disease I don't mean giving up our freedoms; (damaging healthy tissue) that'll hurt more than help.
My suggestion of turning these countries into bombing practice ranges or glass parking lots gets rejected over and over and over again.
The road we've been traveling has worked so well. We spent trillions in Iraq and now it is back to square one. Same will be true in Afghanistan. If you continue to do what you've always done then you should expect to receive the same results you've always received. Think about it.
Radicalization occurs all over the world including on our own soil. Who else you gonna target after you annihilate the 3-4 usual suspect countries? You think the rest of the world is just gonna sit back and enjoy the show? You think the rest of the Muslim countries (we don't have a major beef with...yet) are not gonna have something to say about it?
THINK what got us into this mess to begin with, and start there.
I would expect a lot of "Boston Marathon Bombing" type stuff. You have 500 scumbags convicted & sentenced to death, and now they are free. I expect they will not be applying for normal type work. You have 500 hardcore fight to the death badasses looking for some get'even Jihad. I would also expect our Dept. of Homeland Security.......to use this to further their cause.
Dave - I don't disagree with you but the horse is out of the barn now. We should have done that in '83 when they hit Beirut.
SD - You can rest assured the DHS will in any way they can. That's the scary part to me. My odds of getting clipped by a terrorist is worse than winning the lottery. My odds of getting monitored by DHS are guaranteed.
Oh, let's see...
Having a double standard, propping up bad a$$es who come back to bite us, meddling in centuries old squabbles of which we we have no understanding and no prayer of fixing and getting into places we have no business being in. There's much more, but this alone is not helping us win friends and influence people.:sneaky2:
We haven't won a war since World War II because Washington runs them.
I have to agree with HighHawk. If we want to play war then let the warriors define the battlefield. The politicians can handle the diplomacy right after our warriors thump them on their turf.
The warriors don't decide whether we should go to war in the first place, nor should they. Once the WH declares war, the warriors should be allowed to do their job. Doesn't seem that complicated.
Where's General Patton when you need him?
"Piratical activity by Muslim populations had been known in Mediterranean since at least the 9th century and the short-lived Emirate of Crete. Despite the animosity generated by the Crusades, the level of Muslim pirate activity was relatively low. In the 13th and 14th century it was rather Christian pirates, particularly out of Catalonia, that had been the constant threat to merchants. It was not until the late 14th century that Tunisian corsairs had become enough of a threat to provoke a Franco-Genoese attack on Mahdia in 1390, also known as the "Barbary Crusade". Moorish exiles of the Reconquista and Maghreb pirates added to the numbers, but it was not until the expansion of the Ottoman Empire and the arrival of the privateer and admiral Kemal Reis in 1487 that the Barbary corsairs became a true menace to Christian shipping.[4]
The Barbary pirates had long attacked British and other European shipping along the North Coast of Africa. They had been attacking British merchant and passengers ships since the 1600s. The many captives required regular fundraising by families and local church groups, who generally raised the ransoms for individuals. The British became familiar with captivity narratives written by Barbary pirates' prisoners and some whom were sold into Arab slavery before the North American colonies were well established.[5] This was decades before English colonists became subject to captivity by Native Americans and began to write their own narratives.
During the American Revolution, the pirates attacked American ships. On December 20, 1777, Morocco's Sultan Mohammed III declared that the American merchant ships would be under the protection of the sultanate and could thus enjoy safe passage into the Mediterranean and along the coast. The Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship stands as the U.S.'s oldest non-broken friendship treaty[6][7] with a foreign power. In 1787 Morocco had been one of the first nations to recognize the United States.[8]"

Never stopped us before.
Seems like our soldiers are expendable for the most idiotic reasons; as long as we kill "them", doesn't matter how many of ours have to die. Even one is too many in my book, if it's for all the wrong reasons and it's not going to make one bit of difference in the long run.
I am reading DIRTY WARS by "Jeremy Scahill" and I am NOT happy with what I am reading. This is a painful book for me to read. I wanted to know, but now I wish that I had not wanted to know.
If it ever does, it would be ten fold, WD. TEOTWAWKI, you can be sure.
We need someone who is well known to lead the war on terrorism. Someone who will shamelessly move forward regardless past mistakes. Someone we all know has a set of gonads. And so, I nominate Anthony Weiner for the job. All we have to do is take his cell phone away.
Well my humble opinion, after being in Operation Desert Shield/Storm and doing a little PMC work is that you can't just kill the lead dog, or the next alpha male will take over the pack. To eradicate the problem you take out the entire pack otherwise it's an ongoing problem. Personally I say slaughter the entire pack, sounds like genocide huh? Well these jackwagons follow a corrupted mind, corrupted religion (not all of Islam is like that), doing things that no worthy religion or God would tell you to do. So wipe'um out and good riddance. Nowhere in the Quran does it tell anyone to fill a car full of explosives, strap explosives to your chest, or build small devices to blow up or kill infidels (which only means nonbeliever), or to take a life, in my time over in the sandbox and the Stan I learned that true Islam is a very peaceful, accepting, and forgiving religion. But there is always a radical right wing element that goes to the extremes and carries things to far, these radicals must be eradicated, or the radical extreme violent teachings, thoughts, and actions will always continue. Just my 2¢ worth.
Oh and the U.S. Gooberment (yes I meant it that way) should give the U.S. military their mission, AND LET THEM DO IT, tell the commanding general what you want accomplished and let him and his military do the job they've trained for, don't tie their hands, set rules of war because we're the only ones following them and that joke of a Geneva Convention, to heck with the United Nations, they're undertrained cowards and they su¢k. Just another humble opinion.
Here's a map that lists how many U.N. military and U.N. police come from each member country. It may take a second for the maps to load.

I fixed that spelling error for you. :blushing:
it's over for us if we aint OVER THERE. :-) Why not just let them kill each other? I mean, is there a big shortage of them, or what?
