Nice assortment. I've gotta say - when I first read your thread - I got a little nervous. When I looked a second time I was OK, as I realized there was no "s" at the end of drawer. :innocent:

I have a Brunton Type 16, and a couple Silva "starters", and one affixed to my survival kit that I tore off a surveyors Brunton compass. One day I'll find a GI tritium lensatic for a good price.

I honesty use the Silva starters the most since most of my land nav is done by terrain association.

Just a USGI, official see in the dark issue type.. not the glow from light cheap knock off. Expensive, but well worth it!

I'd bought a Camenga Military Lensatic Titanium compass off of E-bay for $64 including free shipping. It's great!....:laugh:

They are tough compasses, just absurdly heavy.

Most likely have close to the same number, but I don't keep them in a drawer.
They are 'deployed" to bags, coats, fanny packs, hoodies (pin on's), trucks, car, gun stocks, kits.......

I find that when I need one I don't have the drawer nearby.....LOL...If I did, I wouldn't need a compass.

It would take me two hours to gather up my compasses from all of my packs and kits, LOL!

I need to find a place where I can get the quarter sized little compasses in bulk, maybe a dozen or two....and spread them out some more.

My favorite is a Suunto M-3 with adjustable declination
I also have a few Suunto M-10's, without declination adjustment. They are a bargain for a very dependable compass. I learned on baseplate compasses and never got the hang of lensatics.

I dont' really find the little compasses very useful. Hard to take/keep a bearing on them. They'll give you a rough idea of which way to go, but are only a little better than using the sun.

I have a military issue lensatic that I use on occasion. When I became a scoutmaster, I was given a bunch of scout compasses. They are the run of the mill clear base compasses. None of them had a brand name, except for the BSA markings. I then wanted to get a good quality one with declination adjustments. I did a lot of research and found that the Silva Ranger was a clear favorite. Then I did more research and found that the old Silva Ranger is different then the new one. The old one was being made by Brunton as the 15TDCL. So, I bought that one. Now it appears that Brunton has changed their entire line.

If I understand correctly, "Brunton" is a US name, used to distinguish itself from cheap Chinese Silvas sold here. In Europe, Silva (Brunton) is Silva.

It's actually about international trademarks. Here's a post I made on them sometime back...

Compasses are a bit of a confusing animal. They shouldn't be but the corporate jockeying that has taken place makes it that way. Silva made Silva compasses in Europe and China. Johnson Outdoors, being the ever shrewd corporation they are, trademarked the Silva name in the USA. So even though Silva owned the compass name they couldn't market the Silva name in the US. So now it looks like this:

Silva AB sold Brunton, Nexus and Elite in the US. However, since that post, Silva was bought by Fiskars who then sold the Silva name to Karnall AB and the Brunton name to Fenix Outdoors.

Johnson Outdoors sells Silva in the US. You may know Johnson Outdoors as Eureka, Jetboil, Minnkota, Old Towne Canoes or by many of the other outdoor products they sell.

Silva has been making compasses for a long time. Brunton and Nexus are just names. They are Silva compasses and both good brands.

You'll see very distinct similarities between all three, however. Very competitive game.

I think I need a compass to navigate that.

Cuff key....spare watch battery....and a 16 gig micro SD.

The watch has a compass built in...:)....didn't need the small compass.

Battery is in lid.

Pretty slick....all most 007-ish.

Some of you may know that I am on a quest (a long term albeit) to make a complete kit with all homemade items. I have gotten pretty far with a tarp, a sleeping quilt, a tent, a hammock, a sleeping mat, a pack, a knife, etc. I am working on shoes, and clothes. But one thing that seems a little difficult is a compass. This might be something that needs machined parts. Anyways, just thinking out load.

Echo - Check the back of your compass/watch and see if you have a press on case back, held on by screws or a screw on type. If it's screw on then make sure you have a way to remove it otherwise the battery won't be of much use. They make a tool called a Jaxa Wrench, a friction ball or a case wrench to remove the screw on type. If you have screws holding it in place then you'll need something small enough to remove and replace them.

Suunto also uses some backs that just has a large slot. Any coin will fit. Maybe this is one. I'm not familiar with that particular one.

Needle or paperclip, cork and magnet. Might not be good enough for orienteering, but it will give you cardinal directions.

Well, I kinda want it to be good enough for orienteering, and at least as light as a standard compass. I am not looking to do it right now, too many other things on my plate, but I will get back to it someday.

Half my scouts are the same way. I just put together an orienteering course that was in our neighborhood. Some of the scouts had a hard time, despite growing up in the same area. They are learning though.....hopefully.

Small sewing needle on a floating leaf....or can be suspended by a thread small piece of thread....

A needle can take a small amount of magnetism by rubbing/stroking in one direction on a knife, don't know if the knife needs to be carbon or not....

BYW, I carry a small needle under the scales of my SAK, inserted into tweezers or tooth pick hole.
Haven't seen it since....LOL, It's in there somewhere.
