A Woodsman's Axe
Hello all! I wanted to share an axe that I made between yesterday and this morning. It is a wrap and weld construction made from 1/2 x 2 1/12 inch flat bar with a 3/16 x 2 1/2 inch piece of 1095 for the edge. The edge on this one is 5 3/4 inches long, the head is 8 inches long, and the handle is nearly 27 inches long made from curly maple. This axe is wicked sharp and I'll be sad to see it head out the door. :( Oh well I guess I will just have to make one for myself...
P.S. The runes read "Chopper"
Thanks for looking!
Robert

Thanks everyone...expect to see a couple more of these axes soon...they are too fun to not keep one for myself!
-
Very nice work!! Will you please send me a PM with price to have one made?? Thanks, Ronald Woodruff

Man, if I had an axe that pretty, I would find a way to carry it.
-
-
Thanks everyone, Winter It really is just small enough to be easy to carry around but big enough to be useful!
-
I'm curious, do you use gas or coal?
-
-
Randyt, I use propane but can also use coal. I have a couple very efficient gas forges that I prefer to do all my forge welding in as it's a cleaner environment.
-
Thanks, are your gas forges hand built or bought? The reason I ask is I've been struggling with forge welding in my homebuilt gas forge. I ended up getting a rex price 1" burner and still no luck. I've done some forge welding in my coal forge and in my opinion the gas isn't getting hot enough, it has 1"of blanket and 1" of kast o lite 30 based on Indian Georges welding forge. I'm thinking about purchasing a cayenne two burner but don't have the funds at this time.. My goal is to make folded steel axes and tomahawks. I've also made blown burners with no luck. I've spent countless hours with no luck experimenting with gas pressure and such.

I now feel insignificant in the DIY world...
Very sweet build!

EB, I'm grateful for you compliment but please don't feel insignificant...here is what my first axe looked like... I thought it was the best thing every back in 2009 when I was only really playing at the craft.

I like it. JMO, I wouldn't want the rune markings. I like clean. "Less is more".
